Ricky Gervais is an English stand-up comedian, actor, writer, director and producer who rose to fame after starring in a show he co-created and directed, "The Office," which was later remade in the United States. Gervais is not married, but he has been in a relationship with Jane Fallon since 1982.
Gervais was born on June 25, 1961 in Reading, Berkshire, England to parents Eva Sophia and Lawrence Raymond Gervais. He studied at University College in London where he earned a degree in philosophy.
Before becoming an actor and comedian, Gervais was in the music duo Seona Dancing with a fellow student. They released two singles in their time as a band, 鈥淢ore to Lose鈥 and 鈥淏itter Heart.鈥
In 2001, Gervais co-created and starred in the BBC television series, 鈥淭he Office,鈥 where he played David Brent. Although the show only ran from 2001 to 2003 for two seasons, the American remake of the show starring Steve Carell was on for nine seasons, beginning in 2005.
Gervais has also been in a number of movies like 鈥淔or Your Consideration,鈥 鈥淕host Town,鈥 鈥淢uppets Most Wanted,鈥 multiple 鈥淣ight at the Museum鈥 films, 鈥淪pecial Correspondents鈥 and 鈥淭he Willoughbys.鈥
The comedian has also acted in many television shows including 鈥淓xtras,鈥 鈥淟ife鈥檚 Too Short,鈥 鈥淒erek鈥 and 鈥淎fter Life.鈥 Gervais has directed a number of the shows and movies he has starred in.
In addition to his comedic and acting work, Gervais has frequently hosted the Golden Globes. He first hosted the award show in 2010 and went back to host again in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020.
