Two-time winner Carlos Alcaraz will miss Wimbledon as he continues to recover from injury

Wimbledon will be without one of the biggest stars in tennis.

Seven-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz announced on social media that he will withdraw from the tournament he's won twice.

"My recovery is going well and I'm feeling much better, but unfortunately I'm still not ready to be able to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen's and Wimbledon," Alcaraz posted to social media.

"They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot. We’ll keep working to come back as soon as possible!"

The 23-year-old is dealing with inflammation of the tendon sheath in his wrist. He sustained the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open in April.

Alcaraz is already set to miss the French Open, where he's the two-time defending champion, because of the injury.

With Alcaraz out, Jannik Sinner is the favorite to win the French Open.

Alcaraz has won Wimbledon twice, in 2023 and 2024.

The Spaniard has emerged as one of the most dominant players in the sport. He began this year’s Grand Slam tournaments by winning the Australian Open in February over Novak Djokovic.

With the Australian Open victory, he became the youngest man ever to win all four major titles in tennis.

Alcaraz has won two titles this season, and has won 26 in his career. He has a career record of 302-68.

Aryna Sabalenka calls on players to boycott Grand Slams if they don't get higher share of tournament revenues

Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka said she believes that players should organize a boycott of Grand Slam tournaments if they don’t start getting a bigger share of tournament revenues.

Sabalenka, who is the No. 1 ranked women’s player in the world, and men’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner were among a group of highly ranked players who released a statement about the French Open's prize money.

"Without us there wouldn’t be a tournament and there wouldn’t be that entertainment. I feel like definitely we deserve to be paid more percentage," Sabalenka said on Tuesday at the Italian Open.

"I think at some point we will boycott it. I feel like that’s going to be the only way to fight for our rights."

The players are also seeking better representation, health options and pensions from the four Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

The overall prize money for the French Open did increase this year, with a 10% increase for an overall pot of 61.7 million euros ($72.1 million), with the total amount up 5.3 million euros from last year. While the pot increased, the players claim they are seeing less of the tournament revenues than last year.

The players claim their share of Roland Garros revenue has declined from 15.5% in 2024 to a projected 14.9% in 2026, and in their statement said the underlying figures tell a different story.

The players' statement said Roland Garros generated 395 million euros in revenue in 2025, a 14% year-on-year increase, yet prize money rose by just 5.4%, reducing players’ share of revenue to 14.3%.

"With estimated revenues of over 400 million euros for this year’s tournament, prize money as a percentage of revenue will likely still be less than 15%, far short of the 22% that players have requested to bring the Grand Slams into line with the ATP and WTA Combined 1000 events," the players said.

The Australian Open this year increased players’ compensation by 16%, and the U.S. Open prize money last year went up by 20%.

Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff cited the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement as inspiration.

"From the things I’ve seen with other sports, usually to make massive progress and things like this, it takes a union," Gauff said. "We have to become unionized in some way."

"We definitely can move more as a collective."

Gauff said she hasn’t heard any discussions of a walkout, but said she could "100%" see one happening if "everyone were to move as one."

"I definitely think there’s a consensus around that this needs to be addressed for all players of all levels, especially the lower-ranked players, too," Gauff added. "I want to leave the sport better than I found it. If I can say I played my part when I retire, that’s something I can be proud of."

Jasmine Paolini, the Italian who reached the final of the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024, said the WTA and ATP Tours do more than the Grand Slams to provide players with benefits, such as maternity leave and retirement plans.

"There’s a lot of things that the Slams are not doing," Paolini said, "that the WTA and I think the ATP are doing."

She also said a boycott is an option.

"If we’re all in agreement and I think we are — the men and the women are united right now — it’s something we could do," Paolini said.

The French Open starts on May 24, and the singles champions will each receive 2.8 million euros, and the runners-up 1.4 million euros. Semifinalists earn 750,000 euros and first-round losers get 87,000 euros.

The couple’s run at the top of the sport, him a top tennis star and her the top WAG in the game, has ended after almost six years together, according to People.

Riddle became a household name during Wimbledon back in 2022 as she grabbed attention cheering her boyfriend on as Fritz’s battle with Rafael Nadal. She leaned into the WAG life, documenting life as a tennis girlfriend on social media, and he didn’t let it distract him.

The lights never seemed too bright for her and she even stuffed older tennis WAGs critical of her capitalizing on Fritz’s success into a locker. She wasn’t a head down in the box kind of a girlfriend and became "The Most Famous Woman in Men’s Tennis" because of her approach.

Now, Riddle has given herself the title of "World's Best Ex Girlfriend" in an Instagram post that includes, among other breakup clues, her wearing a t-shirt with those words on it.

The rumors of trouble in paradise started in early April when a post, that Riddle shot down, stated that Fritz had dumped her first surfaced. That was followed by another rumor that the tennis star was seen on a dating app.

Aryna Sabalenka to face Nick Kyrgios in Battle of the Sexes tennis showdown

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios announced Tuesday that they will be playing in a "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match next month.

The two tennis stars will face off in a modified exhibition on Dec. 28 in Dubai in front of 17,000 fans at Coca-Cola Arena.

The name of the Sabalenka-Kyrgios exhibition was borrowed from the 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which King won in straight sets in the Houston Astrodome.

The modifications are that Kyrgios will only get one serve, and that he would be hitting toward a smaller side of the court.

Since the end of the 2022 tennis season, Kyrgios has played in just five events, largely because of injuries — one in 2023 and four in 2025. He has since made a name for himself in the broadcast booth.

Both players will also take part in an exhibition in New York on Dec. 8, but not against each other: Sabalenka will play Naomi Osaka, and Kyrgios will face Tommy Paul.

American tennis star Amanda Anisimova defeated Naomi Osaka in three grueling sets, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3, to advance to the U.S. Open final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a match that began Thursday and ended at about 1 a.m. ET on Friday.

The match lasted 2 hours and 56 minutes, and Anisimova said she wasn't sure she was going to make it past the "finish line" to advance to her second straight major final.

"I wasn’t sure I would make it past the finish line and I tried to dig deep," said Anisimova, who needed three match points to get the job done. "It was a huge fight out there today."

Anisimova was on the receiving end of one of the most dominant performances in Wimbledon finals history when she lost to Iga Swiatek, 6-0, 6-0. This time, Anisimova got the better of Swiatek to advance to the U.S. Open semifinals.

Anisimova will play No. 1-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the U.S. Open final on Saturday.

The 24-year-old defeated Sabalenka in three sets in the Wimbledon semifinals in July and is one more upset win away from winning her first Grand Slam title.

Here's what you need to know about Anisimova heading into the U.S. Open final.

Youth and upbringing

Amanda Anisimova is the daughter of Konstantin and Olga Anisimova. The couple emigrated from Russia to the United States in 1998. She was born in New Jersey, but her family moved to Miami, Florida, when she was 3 years old.

Anisimova's father introduced her to tennis when she was 5 years old and became her coach. Her tennis idols growing up were Williams and Maria Sharapova.

In 2019, while preparing for the U.S. Open, her father died at 52 due to a heart attack. Anisimova withdrew from the tournament as she dealt with the sudden loss.

"It was the worst thing that ever happened to me, it was very tough," Anisimova said, per The Sun. "But you can't change it, and you have to get back to life."

The teenage prodigy

Anisimova burst onto the scene when she reached the 2016 Roland Garros girls’ final at just 14 years old. That same year, she reached a career-high ITF ranking of No. 2 in the world. The following year, she defeated Coco Gauff for the 2017 U.S. Open junior title, where she did not drop a single set during the tournament.

Anisimova won five titles in her junior career.

The New Jersey native made her debut on the WTA Tour at the 2017 Miami Open at 15 when she was granted a wildcard into the main draw. She made her Grand Slam debut at the French Open just a few months later, becoming the youngest player to participate in the main draw of the French Open since 2005, when Alize Cornet did it.

WTA career

Her first match win on the WTA Tour came at Indian Wells in 2018, where she made it to the fourth round before losing to Karolina Pliskova. Anisimova’s first WTA title came at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota in 2019.

"I’m really happy and proud of myself for how I got through them, and winning my first WTA title means so much," Anisimova said after the match, per the WTA website.

Anisimova continued her strong play in the 2019 French Open as she made it to the semifinal. She defeated Harmony Tan, Sabalenka and Simona Halep before losing to Ashleigh Barty in three sets.

Anisimova won her second career WTA Title at the Melbourne Summer Set 2 at the beginning of 2022, after mixed results during the 2020 COVID-season and 2021.

Stepping away from the game

In May 2023, 21-year-old Anisimova announced she was stepping away from the game of tennis, citing concerns about her mental health. She wrote in an Instagram post that she had been struggling with "mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022."

"It's become unbearable being at tennis tournaments. At this point, my priority is my mental well-being and taking a break for some time," she wrote in her post.

At the time she stepped away, she was ranked No. 46 in the world.

Anisimova returned to play in January 2024 at the ASB Classic, as she took eight months away from the game. Upon returning, Anisimova played some of her best tennis as she won her first WTA 1000 title at the 2025 Qatar Open.

After she advanced to the Wimbledon final, she said after the match that she "would not believe" that she had made it.

"It’s been a year turnaround since coming back and, to be in this spot, it’s not easy and so many people dream of competing on this incredible court. It’s been such a privilege to compete here, and to be in the final is just indescribable."

While things didn’t go how Anisimova had hoped in the Wimbledon final against Swiatek in July, she now has a chance to redeem her loss and win her first Grand Slam.

Tennis star takes swipe at Jannik Sinner after Wimbledon victory

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios took a swipe at world No. 1 Jannik Sinner after he won Wimbledon for the first time in his career over Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

Sinner won the Grand Slam title in four sets. Kyrgios wasn’t one to immediately celebrate the Italian star’s triumph.

He posted an asterisk on social media.

The reaction came as Sinner’s positive tests for the anabolic steroid clostebol came to light last year. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) suspended Sinner for three months. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said Sinner hadn’t intentionally used a banned substance.

Sinner tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid that can be used for ophthalmological and dermatological use, in March 2024. Eight days after the Indian Wells tournament, Sinner tested positive again in an out-of-competition sample.

According to the ITIA’s initial findings, Sinner explained that he had tested positive after receiving a massage from a trainer who had used an over-the-counter spray that contained clostebol to treat a small wound after cutting his own finger.

Even with the Wimbledon win and a French Open final appearance against Alcaraz, the steroid cloud has yet to disappear over Sinner.

Kyrgios has been one of the biggest critics.

"So wada come out and say it would be a 1-2 year ban," Kyrgios said in a post on X earlier this year. "Obviously sinners (sic) team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a 3 month ban, no titles lost, no prize money lost. Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist."

Sinner now has four major titles – two at the Australian Open, one at the U.S. Open and the other at Wimbledon. The French Open is the only one that has eluded him.

Jannik Sinner picks up 1st Wimbledon title in victory over Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner enacted some revenge on Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday as he won a four-set thriller over the Spanish superstar and picked up the first Wimbledon championship of his career.

Sinner rallied to go up 5-3 in the final set after it appeared Alcaraz was about to flip the momentum. But once he got the opportunity to serve again, Sinner dug in to win the match.

The Italian tennis star won the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

He only made it to the quarterfinals last year before he lost to Daniil Medvedev in five sets. Alcaraz won the tournament over Novak Djokovic then – it was his second straight victory.

"It’s so special because, you know, seeing my parents here, my brother, my whole team, it’s amazing," Sinner said after the match.

He added that he dug down emotionally to get back to his winning ways following the loss to Alcaraz at the French Open.

"But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter how you win or lose in important tournaments, you just have to understand what you did wrong and try to work on that," Sinner explained. This time, it was Sinner who shut down every sliding attempt Alcaraz tried to make to get back into the match. He had the Spaniard running all over the court in the final game before shutting down any idea of a furious rally.

Alcaraz had defeated Sinner in an epic match at the French Open a few months ago. But this time around, it was Sinner who had the advantage.

Sinner, 23, defeated Djokovic and Ben Shelton in the semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively, to earn the shot at Alcaraz. He has four Grand Slam titles to his name now. The only one that still eludes him from the career Grand Slam is the French Open.

American Amanda Anisimova suffers crushing, quick defeat to Iga Swiatek in women’s Wimbledon final

Former top-ranked women’s tennis pro Iga Swiatek earned her sixth Grand Slam title on Saturday after she shut out American Amanda Anisimova in the women’s Wimbledon final in just under an hour.

Swiatek, who has already won titles on clay and hard courts, had never advanced past the quarterfinals at the All England Club – until now. After defeating Belinda Bencic in the semifinal in straight sets, Swiatek advanced to the final where she would face Anisimova.

Despite upsetting current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to earn her place in the final, Anisimova struggled greatly during the 57-minute match. She appeared visibly frustrated after losing the first set 6-0, which lasted around 25 minutes.

By comparison, Swiatek looked smooth on the grass court, not relinquishing a single game to win her first Wimbledon title, 6-0, 6-0. It marked the first women's final at the tournament in 114 years in which one player failed to claim a single game.

"You’re such an incredible player, it obviously showed today," a tearful Anisimova said during the award presentation on court. "You’ve been such an inspiration to me and just an unbelievable athlete."

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated tennis legend Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, Friday to advance to the Wimbledon final at the All England Club.

Sinner, 23, will take on Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday. The Wimbledon final is a rematch of the 2025 French Open, where Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a legendary match that went five sets.

Djokovic was hampered by a groin injury throughout Friday's match. The 24-time Grand Slam winner sustained the injury in his quarterfinal win over Flavio Cobolli.

The 38-year-old canceled his practice session Thursday due to the injury, and it was evident throughout the match against Sinner that Djokovic was not moving as well as he normally does.

At one point during the match, Djokovic requested a medical timeout to receive treatment on the injured groin.

Sinner had just 17 unforced errors compared to Djokovic’s 28. Djokovic struggled on his second serve, winning just 17% of his second-serve points.

American tennis star Taylor Fritz suffered a heartbreaking loss to two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in their semifinal match at the All England Club on Friday, giving the 22-year-old phenom a chance to win three consecutive titles.

Fritz, the no. five seed, put up a fight with the hopes of becoming the first American man to appear in the Wimbledon final since Andy Roddick did so in 2009, but he suffered defeat in the fourth set tiebreak.

"It was a really difficult match. It always [is] when I have to play against Taylor – even tougher with the conditions today," Alcaraz said during his on-court interview.

Sabalenka, the top seed at the Wimbledon Championships, was upset by No. 13 Amanda Anisimova in three sets on Thursday, and in the midst of their battle, Sabalenka apparently didn't love something the American pulled.

In the second set, Anisimova, of the United States, celebrated a point before the ball went by Sabalenka.

Sabalenka was asked about her reaction to the point post-match and did not hold back.

"She kind of p---ed me off, like, saying, 'That’s what she does all the time.' I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I was like ‘I mean, that’s a bit too early,'" Sabalenka said, via The Tennis Letter.

"But I was grateful and thankful that she [did] that because … it actually helped me to keep fighting. I was like, ‘OK, now I’m gonna show you the tennis.’ I came back because I got really angry in that moment. Probably in the third set I should’ve remembered, and probably it would’ve helped. But it is what it is."

Sabalenka also appeared heated during that third set when Anisimova took a 5-2 third-set lead on a forehand that tipped the net and then bounced twice on Sabalenka's side. It's common practice for players to apologize if they score in such a fashion – but Anisimova did not.

Sabalenka appeared to ask the American why she did not apologize.

"I don’t know if that’s anything more than gamesmanship right there," play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler said.

"I’ve never heard a player question that . . . not everyone says sorry. . . . She’s not a happy camper right now," analyst Chris Evert added.

Anisimova, 23, won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a grueling three-set match. The victory for Anisimova sends her to a Grand Slam tournament final for the first time in her career. Prior to this match, Sabalenka had only lost one set in the entire tournament.

Anisimova is the first American woman to make the Wimbledon final since Serena Williams in 2019 - no American has won since Williams three years prior.

American tennis star Amanda Anisimova upset world No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to advance to the Wimbledon women's final on Thursday at the All England Club.

Anisimova, 23, won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a grueling three-set match.

The victory for Anisimova sends her to a Grand Slam tournament final for the first time in her career.

After losing the second set, Anisimosa had her serve broken at love to begin the third set by Sabalenka and momentum seemed to be slipping away. But the American persevered and rallied to win the next three games and go 3-1.

Sabalenka fell down 5-2 in the third set, but won the next two games to bring it back to 5-4, but Anisimova held on to secure the win.

The only other time Anisimova had played in a Grand Slam semifinal prior to her win over Sabalenka was at the 2019 French Open, when she lost as a 17-year-old.

Prior to this match, Sabalenka had only lost one set in the entire tournament.

Sabalenka's hard-fought victory over Laura Siegemund earned the Belarusian tennis star a spot in the Wimbledon semifinal. While Sabalenka seemed pleased to advance to the next round of the prestigious tournament, after the quarterfinal match she took issue with how her words were interpreted.

Sabalenka was questioned about apparently describing her opponent as "annoying."

"You had said before hand that Laura has an annoying game in a complimentary way," a reporter said.

Sabalenka quickly clarified and explained that Siegemund previously described her game as "annoying," suggesting it created a frustrating experience for those competing against her.

"I didn’t say that," the 27-year-old replied. "No, no no, I didn’t say that…. They asked the question that she said that she has an annoying game. I didn’t say that, just to make that clear."

Sabalenka was eventually asked about how she maintained her confidence during the quarterfinal's particularly challenging moments.

American tennis star Ben Shelton suffers crushing defeat in Wimbledon quarterfinals, Jannik Sinner advances

Jannik Sinner moved on to the semifinals of Wimbledon after defeating American tennis star Ben Shelton in straight sets on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old, competing in his first-ever quarterfinal match at the All England Club, put up a fight, but an injured Sinner appeared flawless in the 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 victory.

"I’m very, very happy about today’s performance," Sinner said during his on-court interview. "Playing against [Shelton] is so difficult. You have chances [but] then he serves very well as we saw in the last game… I’m looking forward to these kinds of battles."

The 22-year-old recorded 14 aces, including a powerful 118 mph, and he hit the fastest serve of the match at 132 mph. But that's where Shelton’s success ended. He had 38 unforced errors and failed to convert any break points.

Sinner, on the other hand, powered through an elbow injury to record seven aces and 17 unforced errors.

"There is no better stage to play tennis and I think I showed this today," he continued.

United States women’s national soccer star Trinity Rodman aired out some things that were on her mind about the attention she’s been receiving for supporting boyfriend Ben Shelton at Wimbledon this month.

One of them included not appreciating the ESPN broadcast for bringing up her father, the polarizing ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman.

Trinity wrote an Instagram Story on Monday, where she said she didn't like her personal life being discussed at Wimbledon, which came during the fourth-round match between Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego.

"For Ben’s matches he has his family there as his support system, which includes his dad… my dad’s not even in MY life no need to bring him up during HIS matches when I don’t even want him talked about during mine," Trinity wrote on her story. Trinity also seemingly called out the ESPN team for mispronouncing her team.

"I lost hope in ever getting him back, I answer the phone now for my conscience to be like, ‘He needed to hear my voice’ before anything happens," Trinity said at the time. "That’s why I answer the phone, not for me. He’s not a dad, maybe by blood, but nothing else."

Trinity also said hope was lost after her father made a surprise appearance at her NWSL playoff game for the Washington Spirit in 2021, but never heard from him.

No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka narrowly defeated No. 104-ranked Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals on Tuesday at the All England Club.

Sabalenka, 27, was twice down a break in the third set before she surged and won the final three games of the set.

"She pushed me so much," said Sabalenka after the match on the court. "After the first set, I was just looking at my box, thinking, ‘Guys, I mean, book the tickets. I think we’re about to leave this beautiful city, country, place.’"

Sabalenka hadn’t lost a set in this year’s tournament until she dropped the first set against Siegemund in the quarterfinal.

Siegemund, 37, plays an unorthodox style of tennis that can leave opponents flustered. Siegemund has the ability to change the depth, speed, angles and spins of her shots over and over, which can frustrate any opponent and dull the type of power that Sabalenka brings to the court.

Sabalenka credited Siegemund for playing a "smart game."

For Sabalenka, the win moves her into the Wimbledon semifinals for the third time in her career. She lost in both of her prior Wimbledon semifinal appearances, in 2021 and 2023.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Sabalenka has not appeared in the final. The world No. 1 has won the Australian Open twice, the U.S. Open once, and lost in the French Open.

Taylor Fritz becomes 1st American man to reach Wimbledon semifinals since 2018

Taylor Fritz defeated Karen Khachanov in four sets in the men’s quarterfinal at Wimbledon on Tuesday to become the first male American tennis player to make the semifinals at Wimbledon since 2018.

John Isner was the last American to reach the semifinals of the grass-court tournament.

Fritz, 27, won 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4). The American dominated the first two sets as he took 40 of his 47 service points and never faced a break in that span.

However, in the third set, the match flipped as Khachanov won eight of the next nine games. Fritz said he had never seen a match turn so quickly on him.

"I mean he definitely started playing a bit better, but I feel like I gave him a lot of hope with not the best game to start the third set for me. But I’ve never really had a match change like that so drastically where I felt so in control: serving great, playing great, I didn’t feel like my serve was in danger," Fritz said after the match on the court.

"I felt like I was putting a lot of pressure on his serve and then out of nowhere I feel like I started making a ton of mistakes. Before, I felt like I couldn’t miss and then, all of the sudden, I’m making a ton of mistakes. He’s putting a lot of balls in play, so I really had to fight to get that break back in the fourth and kind of get the match back to neutral."

Fritz fell behind 2-0 in the fourth set, but rallied back to win the set in a tiebreak. The No. 5 ranked player in the world said it feels "great" to get through it.

"I'm feeling great to get through it. I feel like the match was going so well for me two sets. I’ve never had a match really just flip so quickly. I’m really happy with how I kinda came back in the fourth set and got it done. I think momentum was definitely not going be on my side going into a fifth (set)," Fritz said.

Fritz came into the match with a 1-4 record in major quarterfinals, including going 0-2 at Wimbledon. The 27-year-old was the runner-up at the U.S. Open last year.

"It’s an amazing feeling," Fritz said of making his first Wimbledon semifinal.

"Obviously, having played the quarterfinals here twice and having lost in five twice, I don’t think I could have taken another one, so I’m happy. I’m really happy I’m going to get to play the semis here."

Khachanov fell to 0-11 in Grand Slam matches against opponents ranked in the top five with the loss.

Fritz will either face two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain or unseeded Cam Norrie of Britain for a berth in the final on Friday.

Grigor Dimitrov's promising Wimbledon upset bid against Jannik Sinner ends in heartbreaking injury retirement

Grigor Dimitrov was one set away from upsetting Wimbledon’s No. 1-seeded men’s singles player, Jannik Sinner, on Monday.

But an untimely injury changed all of that.

Dimitrov had to retire from the match in the Round of 16 due to an apparent pectoral injury despite owning a 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 lead over Sinner.

In turn, Sinner is heading to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

During a serve, Dimitrov immediately fell on the grass court in pain, grabbing at his right pec. Trainers sprinted out to help him, and it appeared all Dimitrov could do was laugh in the moment, knowing his potential upset was chalked.

Still, Dimitrov’s status was up in the air as he left the court for a medical timeout. However, when he returned to the court, he shook Sinner’s hand to say that he couldn’t continue.

The serve was the set-tying point, as Dimitrov won the fourth game of the third set.

The Centre Court crowd gave Dimitrov a loud ovation despite the circumstances, while he packed his bag to leave the match and the tournament.

"I don’t take this as a win at all," Sinner said after the match, showing respect to Dimitrov in the process.

"I don't know what to say. He is an incredible player. I think we all saw this today. He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years."

Dimitrov was playing well at Wimbledon, where he was hoping to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2014 — his deepest run in the tournament to date.

But injury has been an issue for Dimitrov, especially in Grand Slams. This is the fifth straight tournament he has been forced to retire, most recently occurring in the French Open due to a thigh ailment in the first round.

In 2024, he left the fourth round with an abductor tear during his match against Daniil Medvedev.

After defeating Hungarian tennis player Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in his third-round match at Wimbledon on Saturday, Shelton made a pitch to investment bank Morgan Stanley to have his lucky charm hang around for one more week.

"I’ve been playing well this week. It’s not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend’s here. Also, my sister’s here. She’s been here for every match that I’ve played this tournament so far. She’s been the lucky charm," Shelton said of his sister, Emma.

"But she has work back in the U.S., starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley."

The revelation was met with boos from the crowd, but Shelton interrupted to make his pitch.

Ben Shelton takes 1 minute to defeat opponent at Wimbledon after match was suspended due to darkness

Ben Shelton was serving for the match at the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday, but he had to wait until the next day to do so.

That's because his second-round bout against Rinky Hijikata was suspended due to darkness.

Shelton was leading, 6-2, 7-5, 5-4, when the match was called, and he clearly was not happy - play was suspended at 9:29 p.m. local time, and both players had made arguments to suspend play earlier in the match.

Shelton approached the umpire and had to be held back by another official to calm him down.

Well, Shelton and Hijikata returned to the court early Friday morning to finish the match - and it took one minute to do so, as Shelton advanced to the third round.

"It was difficult. At that point, we kind of knew that we were playing in conditions that weren't ideal for tennis. For me, it was like, ‘what’s one more game at that point?' Shelton said after the match. "I understand the tournament's gotta make whatever decisions they make, and the players gotta live with that. For me, I live with it. I came out today, and I did what I do.

"I hadn't gotten broken the whole match. I haven't gotten broken since my first set in my first round, and I felt confident coming out here having one service game to finish it."

"It's different. I warmed up for 30 minutes, then spent one minute on the court. A lot more time was spent in the preparation than the actual match," he said.

American tennis pros were bounced early from Wimbledon this year, with several top-ranked players dropping in the first and second rounds of the tournament at the historic All England Club this week.

Frances Tiafoe, the 12th-seeded men’s player, exited the Grand Slam after losing a tough battle to Cam Norrie in the second round on Wednesday. The British tennis player, who entered the tournament unseeded, advanced to the third round after a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

But Tiafoe wasn’t the only American to suffer a stunning defeat.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula — the top-seeded American women’s players — were both out after suffering upsets in the first round on Tuesday.

"I definitely was struggling in the locker room. "The main thing I’m sure my team and everyone is going to tell me (is): 'You did well at Roland-Garros. Don't be so upset.' Things like that."

Less than one month ago, Coco Gauff was on top of the tennis world as the French Open champion. Now, she's at the bottom.

The 21-year-old tennis phenom dropped her first round of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday in straight sets to Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Yastremska was ranked as high as 21st in the world back in January 2020, but entered Tuesday's contest at No. 46. Her best finish in a Grand Slam was her 2024 Australian Open semifinal.

Gauff, ranked No. 2 in the world, had a total of 29 unforced errors and nine double-faults. Meanwhile, Yastremska said she was "on fire" throughout the day.

The grass-court tournament has proved to be her least-successful major. It’s the only Slam where Gauff hasn’t made at least the semifinals. She has yet to get past the fourth round and now has been sent home in the first round twice in the past three years.

The transition from clay to grass has proven tough for most players, and the last woman to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season was Serena Williams a decade ago.

Still, since the Open era began in 1968, only Justine Henin in 2005 and Francesca Schiavone in 2010 went from holding the trophy in Paris to exiting immediately in London.

Yastremska now owns an 11-11 first-round record in Grand Slams. Gauff, by contrast, was 20-3 at that stage, including a loss to Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon in 2023.

Yastremska's deepest run at Wimbledon was making the fourth round in 2019, although she did get to the final of the junior event in 2016. She recently reached her first tournament final on grass, at a smaller event in Nottingham, which she said gave her confidence heading to the All England Club.

"I love playing on grass. I feel that this year we are kind of friends," Yastremska said with a laugh. "I hope the road will continue for me here."

American tennis pro Jessica Pegula suffers stunning early Wimbledon exit

American tennis pro Jessica Pegula suffered a stunning and early exit from Wimbledon in the first round on Tuesday when she was defeated in under an hour by 116th-ranked Italian, Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Cocciaretto, 24, managed to pull off her first-ever top five win at Wimbledon with ease, defeating Pegula in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

"To play here in such an unbelievable stadium and such an unbelievable tournament, it’s a dream come true for me. I was so pumped to play Wimbledon this year," Cocciaretto said during her on-court interview following the match.

"I played a really great champion. She’s an unbelievable player, she’s a great example for us."

Pegula's loss comes just days after she defeated Iga Swiatek in straight sets on grass to win the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. Unlike in her match against the five-time Grand Slam champion, Pegula struggled against Cocciaretto’s aggressive play, hitting only five winners and making 24 unforced errors.

"For this to happen today, it’s disappointing. I don’t know how else to put it," she said after the match. "I’m upset that I wasn’t able to turn anything around. But at the same time, I do feel like she played kind of insane. Hats off to her. Kudos to her for playing at a high level that I couldn’t match it today."

Pegula’s bad luck in the first round, which saw six of her first seven appearances at majors result in a first-round loss, came to an end in 2020, when she last lost to top-ranked women’s pro Aryna Sabalenka at the French Open.

Tuesday’s match was reminiscent of those early struggles.

"This is definitely probably the worst result I’ve had all year," Pegula said.

Carlos Alcaraz rushes over to help ill spectator as record-breaking heat takes toll on Wimbledon match

Wimbledon began on Monday with its hottest opening day in history, as temperatures at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club got up to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

While conditions for the athletes were atop the concern list, Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending men’s singles champion, made sure patrons at Centre Court were also taken care of in the heat.

During his four-and-a-half-hour match against 38-year-old Fabio Fognini, play was suspended after a spectator fell ill due to the heat.

Alcaraz was quick to help the cause, grabbing a water bottle near his bench and running it over to the spectator in question. A member of the Wimbledon security also brought over an umbrella to help shade the person.

The BBC reported that the air temperature on the grounds reached 32.2 degrees Celsius (90.1 degrees Fahrenheit) around 4 p.m. BST. The previous record during Wimbledon's opening day was 29.3 degrees Celsius in 2001.

Play resumed in the last set, which was in Alcaraz’s favor, 2-0, after breaking Fognini in the second game. He took the final set, 6-1, and let out a big celebration that might have had some relief sprinkled in there.

This match wasn’t expected to be long, as Alcaraz, fresh off a French Open victory over Jannik Sinner, was supposed to handle Fognini easily in the first round.

However, his career-best 19th straight victory was a marathon, as the 22-year-old was tested by Fognini, who plans on retiring after this year.

Fognini had never made it past the third round at Wimbledon, but he was searching for the upset of the year after defeating Alcaraz in the second set, and taking him down, 6-2, in the fourth to force a decisive fifth one.

A lot of Alcaraz’s struggles, though, were self-inflicted. He had nine double-faults and 62 unforced errors compared to 52 winning shots. He also faced 21 break points, something no one fathomed entering Monday’s opening day.

Alcaraz was even spotted shouting something at his coach’s box during the match. Social media translated his words in Spanish as he believed Fognini had a lot more tennis left in him.

But Alcaraz got the job done in the end, while also making sure to help one of the many in attendance to watch him begin his road to a potential three-peat.

Carson Branstine, model and rising tennis phenom, enters spotlight ahead of Wimbledon match

Carson Branstine was already a fan favorite before she entered the first round of Wimbledon against the top-ranked women’s tennis player in the world, Aryna Sabalenka.

Branstine, of Canada, starred at Texas A&M and helped the Aggies to a national championship before she turned pro. She was able to make the final bracket for Wimbledon after she tore through the qualifying rounds, defeating one-time U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu, Raluca Georgiana Serban and Lois Boisson.

However, what captured the attention of social media before the match against Sabalenka was her status as a fashion model. Branstine is signed with Wilhelmina Models and the Neal Hamil Agency.

She opened up about funding her tennis dreams through modeling in an interview with reporters ahead of Wimbledon earlier this month.

"I love being in front of the camera during a shoot. It’s fun, I love fashion. It’s been one of the reasons I’ve been able to pay some of my trips. I didn’t want to ask my parents for anything — I wanted everything to come from me and from my tennis," she said, via Clay.

"I wasn’t signed by these agencies because of my tennis — it was for my look. Modeling and tennis are weirdly similar – you are an object a lot, and people sometimes forget you’re a person too."

While Branstine fell to Sabalenka in straight sets, she gave the Belarusian a run for her money in the second set, losing 7-5.

She was ranked No. 194 in the world before going up against Sabalenka. She has 136 wins in her career and seven titles in International Tennis Federation events.
