NFL fans debate whether Texans kicker made crucial extra point in win over Colts

The Houston Texans pulled off a four-point win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, 20-16, as fans debated whether kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn successfully made an extra point.

The debate started after Texans wide receiver Nico Collins ran the ball seven yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Fairbairn came into the game to attempt the extra point. He kicked the ball and appeared as though he may have missed it wide left.

However, NFL officials said the kick was good. It sparked a debate on social media over whether the officials made the correct call.

CBS’ rules analyst Gene Steratore explained that Fairbairn’s kick went over the outside edge of the upright. The kick couldn’t be reviewed, according to NFL rules.

Houston picked up the crucial point and was able to hold off the Colts the rest of the way for the win.

C.J. Stroud made his first start since being taken out with a concussion. He was 22-of-35 with 276 passing yards, an interception and two sacks.

Texans running back Nick Chubb had a touchdown to go along with 34 rushing yards. Woody Marks led Houston with 64 rushing yards.

Collins had five catches for 98 yards to go along with his rushing touchdown.

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who was playing with a broken fibula, was 14-of-27 with 201 passing yards and two touchdown passes. His touchdown passes went to Alec Pierce and Tyler Warren.

Pierce led Indianapolis with four catches for 78 yards. Warren had three catches for 22 yards.

Houston’s win tightened the AFC South divisional race. The Jacksonville Jaguars jumped the Colts for first place in the division after a win over the Tennessee Titans and the Texans sit right behind both Jacksonville and Indianapolis.

Baker Mayfield authors incredible final drive to lift Bucs over Texans

Maybe it’s magic. Maybe it’s Baker Mayfield.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star quarterback engineered an 11-play, 80-yard drive that included two heroic plays to keep their hopes alive as they defeated the Houston Texans, 20-19.

On the Buccaneers’ final drive, Mayfield stared down 4th-and-10 from their own 32-yard line. He faced tremendous pressure from the Texans’ defense, but used his legs to run 15 yards to get the first down and keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Mayfield found running back Bucky Irving running across the field. Irving got around a would-be tackler and shed three more on his way to a 22-yard gain.

Mayfield moved the offense down the field and Richaad White punched the ball into the end zone for the 2-yard score. It put the Buccaneers up one point.

The Texans would not have another offensive play even with six seconds remaining.

Mayfield took lick after lick in the game and was sacked four times. He was hit hard on scrambles and even got into the face of Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson after one play. Still, he was 25-of-38 with 215 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He added 33 yards on the ground.

Tampa Bay’s first touchdown came in the first quarter when Mayfield found Ryan Miller on a 20-yard score. Mayfield found rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka for a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Tampa Bay had a 14-10 lead going into halftime.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud struggled in the face of pressure from the Buccaneers’ defensive line. But he kept Houston close late in the game the best he could.

With 2:10 left, Stroud handed the ball off to veteran running back Nick Chubb. He scampered for a 25-yard rushing touchdown to take the lead. It was Chubb’s first rushing touchdown since Nov. 21, 2024.

The Texans’ defense failed to hold up their end of the bargain.

Stroud finished 13-of-24 with 207 yards and a touchdown pass to Nico Collins.

Texans star running back Joe Mixon to miss first 4 games of season due to ankle injury

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon won’t be on the field for the first four games of the season.

The Texans won’t be activating Mixon off the non-football injury list before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday, which makes him ineligible to play the first four games.

"We will officially move RB Joe Mixon from the Active/Non-Football Injury list to the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list," the statement read on X. "Players placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list may begin to practice and play after the club’s fourth game of the regular season. We will provide further updates at an appropriate time."

Mixon has been dealing with an ankle injury he suffered over the offseason.

The 29-year-old has a solid first season with Houston in 2024, where he rushed for 1,016 yards with 11 rushing touchdowns. He earned himself Pro Bowl honors for his efforts.

But with a potential absence in the cards for the Texans, they were proactive in getting another veteran with good past production in the building in case this situation came up.

Nick Chubb was signed following his seven years in a Cleveland Browns uniform. Chubb, who will turn 30 in December, played just eight games last season, rushing for 332 yards with three touchdowns on 102 attempts.

Chubb suffered a gruesome leg injury in 2023 in just his second game of the season, which forced a lengthy recovery. Before that, he was coming off a 2022 campaign, his fourth straight Pro Bowl season, where he tallied 1,525 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns for Cleveland.

The Texans also looked at the potential future at the position when they drafted Woody Marks out of USC back in April. Marks was a fourth-round pick who ran for 1,133 yards on 198 attempts with nine rushing scores, as well as 321 receiving yards on 47 catches.

Houston will likely rely on these two to pick up the slack left by Mixon, who they also hope can return after those missed four games to start the year.

Nick Chubb signs 1-year deal with Texans as former Browns star looks to revamp career: report

Nick Chubb has a new home in the NFL.

The former Cleveland Browns star has signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, worth up to $5 million, per NFL Network.

The deal has a reported base salary of $2.5 million.

Chubb was expected to sign with Houston, but the deal was pending a Monday physical, which clearly went well.

The Browns and Chubb were having discussions about a possible reunion before the 2025 NFL Draft, but NFL Network reported that both sides were unable to find common ground on a deal.

In turn, Chubb was looking for his next opportunity elsewhere, and he got it with one of the best offenses in the NFL.

He will be teaming up with Joe Mixon, the do-it-all running back who had 1,325 scrimmage yards and 1,016 yards rushing with 12 total touchdowns over 14 games in his first season with Houston. He earned himself a trip to the Pro Bowl as a result.

NFL teams have liked the dual running back threat, especially with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs wreaking havoc on the Detroit Lions. As a result, teams have invested in duos that could do the same for their own offense, and head coach DeMeco Ryans is certainly going to like his backfield if they can stay healthy.

Chubb was once an elite NFL running back, breaking out in his second season with the Browns for 1,494 yards on the ground for his first Pro Bowl nod. He had become the workhorse running back Cleveland hoped he would be as a second-round pick in 2018 out of Georgia, earning himself four straight Pro Bowls from 2019-22.

However, Chubb’s career would be derailed a bit by a gruesome knee injury during "Monday Night Football" on the road in Week 2 of the 2023 season. Facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chubb suffered a brutal hit where his knee clearly went in the wrong direction. He was forced out for the remainder of the season.

Chubb had a long recovery, which led to him missing the first six games of the Browns’ 2204 campaign. He would get back out on an NFL field in Week 7, and he rushed for 332 yards on 102 attempts in eight games.

It was not the type of production the Browns were used to from Chubb, which is why they were hesitant to bring him back. When the NFL Draft came along, they took Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson to add to their depth chart that already had Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr.

Thus, Chubb’s time with the Browns came to an end.

Perhaps Chubb can summon his old self in a Texans uniform this season with a team primed for another playoff run.

Broncos outlast Jameis Winston's 497 passing yards to beat Browns in primetime

The Denver Broncos picked up a huge win for their playoff chances, taking down the Cleveland Browns, 41-32, in a back-and-forth thriller on "Monday Night Football."

This game was a shootout much like Jameis Winston’s previous nationally televised bout, which ended in victory for the Browns this past Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But Bo Nix, not Russell Wilson, was Winston’s opposing quarterback this time, and he continued to show why he’s an Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner as he picked apart the Browns’ defense.

On the team’s second drive, Nix was methodical as he dissected the defense, finding fellow rookie DeVaughn Vele for a 16-yard gain that landed the Broncos at the one-yard line. A few plays later, running back Javonte Williams scored the game’s first touchdown to get the home team on the board first.

But leave it to Winston to immediately respond, launching one to Elijah Moore for a 44-yard gain four plays into the next drive to get into the red zone. Then, David Njoku went upstairs to haul in his first of two touchdowns on the night for Cleveland to tie things up 7-7.

The Browns’ offense, though, definitely ran through Jerry Jeudy, who went into this contest against his former team saying he wanted to "whip their a--."

He lived up to those words with 235 yards on nine catches, including a 70-yard touchdown that came immediately after Nix had thrown a dot to Marvin Mims Jr. on third-and-11 for a 93-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

After the Broncos kicked a field goal to make it a 31-26 game, Winston was back under center again, this time looking to take the lead for the first time in this game with a touchdown.

That’s exactly what happened, as Nick Chubb was uncovered on his route for a five-yard score.

However, Nix, who has been calm under pressure throughout this season, continued his good performance by getting his team into the red zone once more and Wil Lutz buried a short field goal to retake the lead, 34-32.

Winston had a chance to respond once more, but he threw his second pick-six of the game, as Ja’Quan McMillan stepped into the out route and wasn’t touched after falling to the turf. He walked right into the end zone to pull away late in the fourth quarter.

That was the victory seal for Denver, as Winston and the Browns didn’t have any magic in them to pull spoiler yet again.

Looking at the stat sheet, Nix was 18-for-35 for 294 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, with Mims (3 catches, 105 yards) and Courtland Sutton (6 catches, 102 yards) leading the team.

On the ground, Jaleel McLaughlin had 84 yards on 14 carries for the Broncos.

For the Browns, Winston had a whopping 497 yards passing on 34-of-58 with Moore also tallying 11 yards on eight catches. Njoku finished with nine receptions for 52 yards and his two scores.

Browns use blizzard conditions to upset AFC North rival Steelers in 4th quarter comeback

The league’s first snow game of the season appeared to be a low-scoring bout at first, but a fourth-quarter thriller ensued in the harsh conditions as the Cleveland Browns upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, 24-19, in a wild AFC North battle.

The Browns moved to 3-8 on the season, while the Steelers are now 8-3.

High winds, a temperature that felt below 30 degrees and tons of snow were dumped on Huntington Bank Field throughout this contest, and both teams were attempting to get acclimated to the conditions that continued to get worse as time ticked on the clock.

The Steelers found themselves down two scores after Jameis Winston powered his way into the end zone on fourth-and-goal to make it 18-6 after a failed two-point conversion.

However, Russell Wilson and the Steelers’ offense, which had not scored a touchdown all game to this point, knew it was now or never early in the fourth quarter to get moving.

After seven plays, Jaylen Warren scored on the ground from three yards out to make it 18-13, with a touchdown all that was needed to take the lead.

First, the Steelers’ defense had to get the ball back from Winston and company, and while a punt would have sufficed, Nick Herbig had something else in mind.

On the second play of the drive, Herbig strip-sacked Winston and the ball was recovered on Cleveland’s 27-yard line. Three plays later, Wilson threw a dot to Calvin Austin in the back of the end zone to make it a 19-18 game.

However, the Browns, with fans braving the weather in the stands to cheer them on, found life on their final drive of the game, where Nick Chubb scored his second touchdown of the game with 57 seconds left on the clock to go up five points after the two-point conversion failed.

Chubb, who found the end zone with four minutes left in the second quarter, as well, finished the game with 59 yards on 20 rush attempts.

His score, however, would not have come without Jerry Jeudy hauling in a fourth-and-3 pass to move the chains earlier in the drive, while also going for 15 yards on third-and-6 to land on Pittsburgh’s 15-yard line to set up Chubb’s score. Jeudy finished the game with a team-high 85 yards on six catches.

Wilson had a last-ditch effort to try to retake the lead, attempting to keep the Steelers’ five-game win streak alive. But his efforts were all for naught. He finished the game with 261 yards passing on 20-of-26 with his touchdown to Austin, who had 69 yards on just two catches.

For the Browns, Winston was 18-of-27 through the air for 219 yards.

Browns' Nick Chubb says return to practice 'felt like a dream' after long recovery from gruesome knee injury

All-Pro running back Nick Chubb's road to recovery was lengthy.

The Cleveland Browns star suffered a devastating knee injury early last season, missed 15 games in 2023 and underwent two procedures to repair two ligaments, a meniscus and his medial capsule.

This week, Chubb took a major step forward in his comeback bid when he returned to practice.

"It didn’t feel real," Chubb said. "It felt like a dream."

Chubb also provided an encouraging health update, saying his surgically repaired knee responded well to his first time working out on the practice turf in over a year.

"I feel like I’ve been up and battling this for a while now," Chubb said Thursday. "It was great to get all that off my shoulders and finally get back out there."

While Chubb has been running and lifting weights in recent months, it remains unclear when he will suit up for an NFL game.

Chubb began the season on the physically unable to perform list and is expected to retain that designation when the Browns take on the Washington Commanders Sunday. In designating him to return to practice, the Browns have a 21-day window to add Chubb to the active oster.

He could be active when Cleveland travels to Philadelphia to play the Eagles in Week 6. But Chubb has his own timeline for when he'll play.

"Whenever I feel good," he said.

Injuries are nothing new for Chubb, who tore ligaments in the same knee while playing at Georgia in 2015. At some point, he’s going to take a hard hit on the knee, but that is not something he fears.

"Once you get out there and you’re running around, it’s like you’re 8 years old again," said Chubb, who has rushed for 6,511 yards and scored 48 touchdowns. "It’s like riding a bike. That’s not something that’s in my head. I mean, you can’t control that.

"I’m going to go out there and play fast."

The Browns entered Week 5 with a disappointing 1-3 record.

Nick Chubb gets positive news following initial tests on gruesome injury: report

The early news on Nick Chubb's injury is more positive than expected.

Initial tests revealed the Cleveland Browns running back tore his left knee MCL only Monday night, and the injury is not considered career threatening, ESPN reports.

Chubb took a goal-line carry when he was hit low by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. His left leg bent so gruesomely ESPN opted not to show the replay.

Fans at the stadium saw the replay and let out an audible groan.

The 27-year-old immediately grabbed his knee and was carted off the field to a standing ovation. And the Browns were quick to say Chubb's season was likely over with what they called a "significant" injury to his knee.

EPSN also said the ACL was "stretched," but not torn. According to the report, Chubb is likely to undergo surgery this week, and the hope is more damage isn't found.

The recovery time is roughly six to eight months.

Observers were quick to say Fitzpatrick's tackle was dirty, but the six-year veteran defended the hit.

"You can tell me how to tackle him low, but it's a fast game. It's a game (where) you make decisions in milliseconds. Can't really control what happens after you choose to make your decision.

"I already chose to go low. Somebody got on his back when I was going low, and what happened happened. There's nothing I really would do differently. Again, like I said earlier, it's very unfortunate. Nick Chubb's a great player. He makes the game a lot better when he's playing. Just hope for a speedy recovery."

Bijan Robinson says 'its sucks' to see Nick Chubb's injury: 'He paved the way for so many running backs'

Nick Chubb has racked up over 1,000 yards each of the past four seasons and has been one of the top running backs in the NFL since the Cleveland Browns selected him in the second round of the 2018 draft.

Chubb appeared to be well on his way to producing another 100-yard rushing performance Monday night. He had gained 64 yards on nine carries during the Browns' Week 2 game against the Steelers, but his tenth carry resulted in a gruesome injury.

Chubb was tackled by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and remained on the ground grabbing his leg in obvious pain.

The four-time Pro Bowler was eventually carted off the field and later ruled out of the game with a knee injury.

"Nick’s got a very significant knee injury," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after Monday's night game. "He’s a great football player as we know, but he’s an even better person. So, we will support him every step along the way."

Chubb and Atlanta Falcons rookie sensation Bijan Robinson both had prolific college careers. Chubb bounced back from a knee injury during his time with the Georgia Bulldogs.

From 2020-22, Robison played for the Texas Longhorns.

Robinson was considered the consensus top running back in this year's NFL Draft, and his rookie year is already off to an impressive start. Robinson said Chubb paved the way for running backs like him.

"I was hard to see that," Robison said to Chubb's season-ending injury. "He paved the way for so many running backs. … His running style and just who is as a person, I just think it just sucks to see that. He's a guy that does everything right. … He does everything the right way. And to see that he got injured like that … especially because he got injured in college, it really does suck." Robinson told 91�� Digital.

"For a guy like him that's been the standard in the NFL for a long time … it sucks."

Robinson added that he wanted to be respectful of Chubb's situation and give him some time before he personally reached out to the Browns star. Robinson considers Chubb a role model and said when he does eventually speak with Chubb he would check on how he was doing.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet. Obviously, I know everybody is blowing up his phone. I kind of want to give him some time to think and get some other things out the way. … I'm going to be able to talk him and just see how's he's feeling … see how he's doing because he's such a huge role model for me and so many other guys in the league." Shortly after Chubb went down with the devastating injury, Robinson took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a message.

"Nick Chubb. God is right there with you! Role model," Robison wrote along with a praying hands emoji.

Reactions also poured in from the NBA world.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who was born in Ohio, took to social media to offer his best wishes.

The plight of the NFL running back has been widely discussed this past offseason, and those discussions have come back to the forefront after Chubb's injury. Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler, one of the most outspoken players on the topic, has also dealt with an injury this season.

Robinson is not only a talented runner. He can also go out wide as a receiver. His unique skills are what attracted the Falcons to him.

Despite the state of the running back market and its salaries, Robinson hopes to open doors for young players who aspire to be ball carriers.

"The way to change the position is being able to do so many different things on the football field. For me … lining up at receiver, lining up at slot, making yourself someone that is valuable for your team, for your offense. A lot of running backs in college, they text me and ask me for advice and how to be successful and how to do some many things in this league.

"I tell them you can't just be a one-dimensional player, like you can't just be a running back. You gotta be a guy that they can count on at receiver, a guy that they can count on a slot. A guy that they can count on in different situations that your team needs because that's what gonna gain value in you as a player. Minkah Fitzpatrick defends hit that injured Nick Chubb: 'There's nothing I really would do differently'

Following Nick Chubb's gruesome injury on Monday night, fans were quick to point the finger.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick made the tackle that resulted in the injury that ESPN didn't even opt to show a replay of. (It's accessible on the Internet if you so choose.)

Football, of course, is a rather violent game, and as injuries have increased over the years, players of all levels have been taught safer ways to tackle players - primarily to avoid head injuries.

But of course, at the NFL level, the perfect tackle isn't very easy to make. Despite this, fans were quick to say that Fitzpatrick's hit was dirty, as he should've tackled Chubb high at the goal line, rather than going low.

But the six-year vet says he wouldn't do anything differently.

"I would say, one: they've never tackled Nick Chubb before if they're telling me to go high," Fitzpatrick told the NFL Network.

He also described how quickly the play happened, so there wasn't much time to think, and he was simply just being reactive to what he saw.

Nick Chubb's injury Monday night was one of the more distressing moments on a football field in recent memory.

The damage to his knee looked so gruesome ESPN opted not to replay the tackle on which he was hurt during its broadcast.

The Cleveland Browns were quick to say Chubb's season is likely over given it's a "significant" injury.

It's clear Chubb has his work cut out for him, but here's a reminder this is not Chubb's first serious injury to his left knee. He had a similar injury in 2015 at the University of Georgia.

Tom Christ, a doctor of physical therapy who also co-hosts the "Fantasy Injury Team" podcast alongside Joe D'Amico, said assuming the severity of this injury is similar to the previous one, a return is even more difficult.

"If it's the same tissues that need to be repaired again, the quality of the tissue is not quite as good the second time around," Christ told 91�� Digital in a recent interview. "The younger you are, healing is much, much better. But this time around, being he's 27, and he's a running back, that's kind of getting up there in age for running backs anyway.

"There's definitely a possibility that that previous injury has led to not as ideal tissue quality for the healing and the repairing process, but he's got a lot of hurdles ahead of him to get back on the field."

Christ says Chubb is now a candidate for early onset arthritis, but with the amount of damage done to his knee, the toughest parts of the rehab are the very beginning and the very end.

"The protocol for what you can do post-operatively from the start, it's gonna change based on how many tissues are involved," Christ said. "Let's say [the meniscus] has to be repaired. You're gonna be limited in how much range of motion you can work in the first six weeks. Same with if a (posterior cruciate ligament) is involved. That's gonna really limit how much range of motion you can work early on.

"Generally speaking, the more tissues involved, the slower the first six to eight weeks of rehab are from a range of motion standpoint. And when you're limited in how much range of motion you can go through early, sometimes you get scar development, which makes it very, very hard to ever regain motion."

And while Chubb is a physical freak who can squat at least 675 pounds, regaining his original strength is going to be difficult.

"As he rehabs, he's gonna get a lot of that strength back, but it's the last bit of strength that's super hard to get. … His game is built off his power, right? That's gonna be really pivotal for him to get back to playing at an elite level in the NFL. It's not just to get to 80% of his unaffected size or strength, but to get as close to 100% as possible, and that takes a year-plus most of the time," Christ said.

The fact that Chubb plays the running back position also is going to affect his rehab in a negative way. Christ says wide receivers may actually have an easier rehab for such an injury because of the "nature of the position."

"Running backs are more reactive. They are reacting to the holes that open, where the defenders are coming through, so it's a lot of stop and go, but not knowing when they're gonna stop and when they're gonna go again. Whereas receivers … it's much more predictable of a position than a running back is because running backs are really just reacting.

"The stop-and-go change of direction is the hardest part coming back from an ACL. … It's not nearly as hard to get your full 40-yard dash sprint speed back as it is to get your stop and go, react to a defender or whatever's going on on the field back. So, it's definitely harder for running backs than receivers."

It's a tough road for Chubb. Christ notes that running backs normally decline at around age 29. And running backs see an average of a 35% decrease in production in their return from ACL injuries. If he returns fully healthy, he'll be close to the haunted age for running backs.

"Is his career over? I'm not gonna say that. Is it gonna be very hard for him to get back to playing elite football? Yes, it definitely will be," Christ said. "It's possible that he can be productive again in this league, but he's definitely got his work cut out for him."

Kareem Hunt returns to the Browns, signs one-year deal following Nick Chubb's season-ending knee injury

Ohio native Kareem Hunt will once again be toting the rock for the Cleveland Browns.

According to a report for NFL Media, the veteran running back agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract. The Browns have since confirmed Hunt was signed.

The move to bring back Hunt comes just a couple of days after star running back Nick Chubb suffered a devastating knee injury that brought his season to an abrupt end.

On Wednesday, the Browns made another roster move by placing Chubb was on injured reserve.

Hunt appeared in 17 games with the Browns last season, running for 468 yards. He spent the offseason as a free agent despite appearing to draw interest from multiple teams.

The Pro Bowl running back was productive over the past two seasons. But given the state of running backs' market value, he was not able to land a deal — until this week.

Hunt had somewhat of a turbulent 2022 campaign with the Browns. An apparent disagreement over how the running back was used in games eventually led to Hunt requesting a trade. But the injury to Chubb seemed to have changed the Browns' and Hunt's mindset as it related to a reunion.

Second-year running back Jerome Ford played well when he was thrust into action Monday night against the Steelers following Chubb's injury.

Ford ended the game with 106 yards on 16 carries, but the majority of those yards came on a 69-yard carry.

The Browns also recently added Pierre Strong to their running back depth chart. Aside from the running game, the team will also have to get quarterback Deshaun Watson on track if it wants to keep its postseason hopes alive.

Steelers force Browns to crumble in fourth quarter to pick up first win of season

A wild AFC North matchup on Monday night resulted in the Pittsburgh Steelers pulling off a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Cleveland Browns, 26-22.

The big turning point of the game came in the fourth quarter when Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith, who already had a pick-six on the first play from scrimmage in this game, got through the Browns’ offensive line and forced the ball out of Deshaun Watson’s hand.

With the ball on the ground, T.J. Watt, who set the Steelers all-time sacks record in the second quarter at 81.5, scooped up the loose ball and ran it into the end zone to flip the momentum back to Pittsburgh. It was his first career touchdown, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as the score moved to 26-22 in the fourth quarter.

The Browns were able to get a big stop later on 3rd-and-1 to force a punt from the Steelers, giving Cleveland over two minutes to drive down the field in comeback fashion. But Watson didn’t have the late-game magic to bring Cleveland to its first 2-0 start since 1993.

Watson completed a few passes, but wasn't able to find Donovan Peoples-Jones on fourth down near midfield, ending the game in favor of the Steelers.

It's Pittsburgh's first win of the season after falling to the San Francisco 49ers last week, while Cleveland falls to 1-1.

BROWNS STAR NICK CHUBB SUFFER GRUESOME LEG INJURY, BROADCAST AVOIDS REPLAY

This back-and-forth battle got off to a wacky start at the first play from scrimmage, when Watson threw a pass to tight end Harrison Bryant that bounced around before Highsmith plucked it from the air and ran it back 30 yards for a pick-six. The Acrisure Stadium crowd erupted as the home team got out to a 7-0 lead.

But the Steelers’ first offensive drive of the game didn’t go so well either. Second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett threw a pass intended for George Pickens right into the hands of Grant Delpit.

The turnover party wasn’t over in the first quarter, though, as Watson fumbled, and then Gunner Olszewski did the same on the first play of the ensuing drive.

Watson used that second chance to finally get into the end zone, but one of the Browns’ key players suffered a gruesome injury. Running back Nick Chubb, who was having a great half, was hit in the left knee by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who also suffered a chest injury on the play.

Fitzpatrick’s impact on the leg of Chubb caused his knee to bend back awkwardly, and Chubb was in immediate pain. The injury was so bad that the ESPN broadcast refused to show the replay, and with the play going viral on social media, there was a good reason why that was the case.

Chubb was carted off the field, and his face said all that was needed to show how serious the injury could be for the veteran running back. He finished the game with 10 carries for 64 yards.

His backup, Jerome Ford, was able to punch in his first career touchdown, rushing three yards for the score to take a 9-7 lead.

The Steelers were able to force a couple of punts from the Browns, and after a field goal make it 11-10, Pickett was able to find Pickens on a slant route and the electric wide receiver used his speed to take it to the house for a 71-yard touchdown.

Pickens finished the game with a game-high 127 yards on just four catches, though Pickett did target him 10 times.

While the Steelers tallied the victory, offense needs to be addressed quickly as Pickett once again struggled. He was just 15 of 30 through the air with one touchdown and his interception. The run game also struggled with Najee Harris rushing for just 43 yards on 10 carries.

For the Browns, there’s no sugarcoating how much of a loss Chubb would be, but Ford did well with his chance in the offense. He had 106 yards rushing on 16 attempts to lead the team. Amari Cooper also finished with a team-high 90 receiving yards.

Browns star Nick Chubb suffers gruesome leg injury, broadcast avoids replay

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb was ruled out for the remainder of the "Monday Night Football" game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after suffering a gruesome left knee injury the broadcast wouldn't show the replay of.

Chubb was given his 10th rushing attempt with the Browns in the red zone when he was met by multiple Steelers defenders, including safety Minkah Fitzpatrick who dove low for the tackle.

When Fitzpatrick made contact with Chubb’s leg, his left knee immediately buckled and he was seen holding his knee. Teammates tried to help him up, but Chubb remained seated and in considerable pain.

As everyone watching in the stands and at home were trying to see what happened to Chubb, ESPN announcer Joe Buck said the broadcast wouldn’t be showing the replay because it was that gruesome.

"I am told that the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen," he said.

The crowd’s reaction after seeing the replay on the Jumbotron said it all, as a unified gasp was heard over the broadcast.

"We’re not going to show it. It’s as bad as you can imagine," his partner, Troy Aikman, added.

A cart quickly came out on the field for Chubb, who needed help getting on, and his face showed pain and sorrow knowing that his injury could be a serious one.

The Browns wasted no time ruling Chubb out for the remainder of the game.

Chubb was having a good half, rushing 10 times for 64 yards before his night ended.

It’s worth noting Chubb has an injury history with his left knee. He dislocated it on Oct. 10, 2015, while also tearing his MCL, PCL and LCL with cartilage damage in a game for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The sports world showed its support for Chubb after watching the unfortunate play.

"Just the worst feeling," NFL great J.J. Watt said on X, formerly Twitter. "Gutted for Nick Chubb. Hope Minkah is ok. Injuries suck man. They absolutely suck."

LeBron James added: "DAMN MAN!!!! Nick Chubb. Praying for the absolute best."

Deshaun Watson did not talk to the media Wednesday, but in the days leading up to his return to the field following a near-two-year absence, his Cleveland Browns teammates and colleagues are excited.

Watson will play his former team, the Houston Texans, after an 11-game suspension. He was accused of sexual misconduct in about two dozen civil lawsuits from massage therapists. He has settled 23 of the lawsuits ,and the attorney for the women said at least 10 of the women who accused the quarterback of wrongdoing will be at NRG Stadium for the game to serve as a reminder.

Watson’s teammates said they were excited about Watson’s return. Jacoby Brissett has led Cleveland to a 4-7 record and only three games behind the division-leading Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North with six games remaining on the schedule.

"We are all excited," running back Nick Chubb said. "We have all waited a long time for him to come back, but it is the same thing. We have to go out there, we have to work, can’t get too distracted by anything and keep the main thing the main thing."

Chubb surpasses 1,000 yards rushing for the fourth straight season and is posed to set a career-high in rushing touchdowns. He has 12 this season and had 12 in 2020.

While Watson did not speak, quarterback coach Quincy Avery shed some light on how he has looked and stayed fit while being away from the team facility.

"I think he’ll handle that fine," Avery told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "They’re going to be in a suite a bunch of seats up. I don’t know what impact that really has on him. But whatever makes (attorney Tony Buzbee) happy."

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said he did not think Buzbee bringing Watson’s accusers to the game will be a distraction.

"I think a lot of that was just getting back in uniform, in the huddle, hearing my voice in the headset and those type of things," Stefanski said. "That was all about the preparation. I don’t put much stock on that."

Cleveland Browns fans got a startling surprise as they watched their team defeat Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

A skunk appeared on the steps of FirstEnergy Stadium sending fans into a frenzy.

According to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, the skunk was found first in section 140 underneath step and moved along trying to get some more food. The section was then cordoned off and after the game, it was still walking around looking for food.

The skunk eventually made its way out of the stadium without spraying anyone the entire game, the newspaper reported.

Cleveland won the game 23-17 in overtime and was propelled by a David Njoku touchdown catch from Jacoby Brissett late in the game. Cleveland had to hold Tampa Bay from the end zone to get another chance at winning the game.

Brissett used the Browns’ second chance to end the game well, finding Amari Cooper for a 46-yard pass that set up a Nick Chubb 3-yard touchdown run to send Browns fans home happy.

"Now, I mean this as no disrespect," Brissett said. "But in the words of Tom Brady, that was f---ing awesome."

It was 4th-and-10 on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 12-yard line, and the Cleveland Browns needed a touchdown to force overtime when Jacoby Brissett fired a pass to the middle of the end zone where David Njoku made an insane one-handed grab for the score.

The clutch catch led to a 23-17 overtime victory over Tom Brady and the Bucs as the Browns picked up their fourth win of the season in upset fashion.

When Brady got the overtime coin flip to go his way, fans grumbled, knowing he has the most game-winning drives in NFL history. But Cleveland stepped up and forced not just one but two punts in overtime, allowing the offense a chance for the upset.

Brissett used the Browns’ second chance to end the game well, finding Amari Cooper for a 46-yard pass that set up a Nick Chubb 3-yard touchdown run to send Browns fans home happy.

The start of this game worked out in the Browns’ favor as Brissett led a seven-play, 78-yard drive that Anthony Schwartz capped with a 31-yard rushing touchdown down the right side to go up 7-0.

But Brady, who has been playing better lately, found Chris Godwin on a 10-yard strike to tie the game.

Also, with the injured Leonard Fournette, Rachaad White got another start and totaled 64 yards on 14 carries, while catching all nine passes from Brady for 45 yards.

Brady had yet another game in which he threw more than 40 times, going 29 of 43 for 246 yards with two touchdown passes. His second came in the third quarter when he found Ko Kieft for a 5-yard touchdown on his only catch of the game.

Brissett would finish the game 23 of 37 for 210 yards with a touchdown and an interception in what’s likely his final start of the season. Deshaun Watson can return next week for the Browns following his 11-game suspension, and the Browns have made it clear that Watson will be playing against the Houston Texans on the road next Sunday.

Chubb set the tone once again for the Browns with 26 carries for 116 yards and his game-winning score. Cooper led the receiving game with 94 yards on seven catches.

The NFL’s leader in passer rating, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, was efficient yet again in a 39-17 rout over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Tagovailoa tallied three passing touchdowns and 285 yards on 25 of 32 through the air for the Dolphins’ seventh win of the season.

But it wasn’t just Tagovailoa’s passing prowess that shined in Miami, as Jeff Wilson Jr., who was traded to the Dolphins from the San Francisco 49ers prior to the NFL trade deadline, had his first breakout game with his new squad. He had 119 yards on the ground with a touchdown on 17 carries while catching two passes for 24 yards.

And his running back partner, Raheem Mostert, had a touchdown on the ground, too, with 65 yards on eight touches.

It was actually a good start for the Browns in this game as they scored on the opening drive with a Harrison Bryant 1-yard catch from quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

But the Dolphins matched them with their own opening score as Tagovailoa found Alec Ingold for a 13-yard score, his first passing touchdown of the day, in a drive that lasted six minutes.

Still holding on, the Browns needed a stop once the second half began to get back on track. However, Mostert had his 24-yard rushing touchdown that made it 24-7, and the Dolphins never looked back.

The Dolphins were able to handle Chubb well in this one as he had just 63 yards on 11 carries, though he had a 33-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Brissett went 22 of 35 for 212 yards and his one passing touchdown to Bryant while rushing for 40 yards on seven carries.

The Cleveland Browns (3-5) took scary to another level on Halloween night, as they haunted the Cincinnati Bengals (4-4) in a 32-13 win on their home turf Monday.

Cincinnati was coming into this game without their top receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, who will be out a few weeks with a hip injury. But Joe Burrow was confident that his other receiving options, namely Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd, along with the run game that Joe Mixon brings would keep their offensive threat potent.

But the Browns had the answer for just about everything throughout this game, and that allowed Jacoby Brissett and Nick Chubb on Cleveland’s offense to get to work.

Brissett finished the game with 278 yards through the air on only 22 attempts, completing 17 with a touchdown through the air and one rushing. Meanwhile, Chubb was tremendous yet again, as the NFL’s league leader in rushing had 101 yards on 23 carries with two scores.

Cleveland got off slow on offense despite the score. Cade York would miss a field goal on the team’s first drive after it was blocked, Amari Cooper threw an interception on a trick play and then they would punt after five plays.

But Brissett finally got something going in the second quarter when he got the ball all the way down to the Cincinnati eight-yard line, which led to Chubb finding the end zone for a league-leading ninth time on the ground. A two-point conversion made it 8-0.

The second half was a different story, though, as the Browns turned up the heat and their fans loved it. They began the half with an 11-play drive that resulted in Brissett sprawling toward the left pylon for a three-yard rushing score to make it 18-0.

And after the Browns’ defense forced a three-and-out, eight plays was all the Browns needed for Amari Cooper to win a one-on-one matchup to score his touchdown and make it hard for the Bengals to come back from a 25-0 deficit.

In fact, albeit the interception on his first career pass in the NFL, Cooper had his best game as a Brown. He finished with 131 yards on five catches, which included a 53-yard bomb from Brissett that Cooper caught after leaving his feet.

Chubb would eventually score his second touchdown of the night to cap the Browns’ solid offensive performance.

The Browns defense got to Burrow immediately in this game, which stymied their offense. Myles Garrett tipped a pass intended for Higgins and A.J. Green came up with the interception to switch fields. Then, after three straight punts, the Browns came away with another turnover, a fumble on a strip sack by Sione Takitaki.

They were also able to sack Burrow five times, as the Bengals’ line broke down. Garrett led the way with 1.5 sacks, giving him 7.5 on the season through seven games.

It would take Burrow and the offense until the fourth quarter to put their first points on the board, and it was Boyd and Higgins finding the end zone. Higgins had the highlight-reel play, though, snatching a ball out of the air over his defender for a 41-yard score.

Mixon didn’t help much in the run game, finishing with just 27 yards on the ground, though he had 32 yards on seven receptions.

Burrow remains winless in his career against the Browns, going 0-4 in his two seasons. Meanwhile, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is 5-0 against the Bengals.

Gus Edwards scored two touchdowns in his long-awaited return, staking Baltimore to a double-digit lead in the second half.

Those haven't exactly been safe this season for the Ravens, but this time they managed to hold on.

Baltimore avoided another fourth-quarter collapse thanks to a couple huge Cleveland penalties that helped the Ravens hold off the Browns 23-20 on Sunday. Baltimore outrushed Nick Chubb and Cleveland 160-113 and remained in a tie with Cincinnati atop the AFC North.

"We kind of had the lead again. What's going to happen?" Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. "Focus on what you've got to do within the play, not within the situation and the circumstances. Circumstances really doesn't matter. What matters is the play call and doing your job."

Baltimore (4-3) has blown a double-digit lead in the second half of each of its three losses this season. The Ravens led 23-13 after Justin Tucker’s 55-yard field goal with 11:24 remaining, but the Browns quickly responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt to make it a three-point game. Then a fumble by Baltimore’s Justice Hill gave Cleveland the ball at its own 16 with 3:12 to play.

The Browns reached the Baltimore 34 before an offensive pass interference call wiped out a touchdown pass to Amari Cooper, who appeared to hold off cornerback Marcus Peters with his arm. Cleveland still made it back into position to try a long field goal, but a false start before that snap forced Cade York to try it from 60.

His attempt was blocked by Malik Harrison with 1:59 remaining, and the Ravens were able to run out most of the remaining time.

"I almost had one when I was in high school, but this is my first one," said Harrison, who said the kick hit him in the face.

The officials had a lengthy discussion before the false start call, which was obviously a huge swing since it pushed the field goal back when an offside flag would have moved it closer.

"The margin of error in this league is pretty slim," Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett said. "You go out there and play pretty well and sometimes you still don’t get the results that you want, but that can’t change the way we come to work."

Cleveland (2-5) has lost four in a row. Chubb had 91 yards on 16 carries.

Edwards hadn't played in a game that counted since Baltimore's playoff loss to Buffalo on Jan. 16, 2021. He missed all of last season and the first six games of this one following a major knee injury.

He rushed for 66 yards Sunday and scored on runs of 7 and 1. The latter came on a fourth-down play in the third quarter that made it 20-10.

"I'm even fortunate to be playing right now with the type of injury I had," Edwards said. "It was ACL, hamstring, LCL."

The Ravens trailed 10-3 after one — the first time all season they were behind after any quarter except the fourth. Their offense seemed to find a rhythm late in the second, when Lamar Jackson led a 10-play, 80-yard drive, and Edwards' first TD put Baltimore up 13-10 at halftime.

Brissett lost a fumble in the third, giving the Ravens the ball at the Cleveland 25, and Edwards capped that short drive with another touchdown.

This was the first game all season Baltimore didn't score first, and the first time the Ravens allowed any points on an opponent's first possession. Cleveland marched 75 yards in 11 plays after the opening kickoff and took the lead on a 2-yard run by Chubb.

DESHAUN WATSON CAUGHT DRIVING NEARLY 30 MPH OVER SPEED LIMIT, MONTHS AFTER TRADE TO BROWNS

The teams traded field goals, and then Baltimore settled for another one that made it 10-6 even after a punt return had given the Ravens the ball at the Cleveland 21.

Neither team had a great deal of success passing — and the Browns lost tight end David Njoku to an ankle injury after he caught a team-high seven passes for 71 yards. Jackson was sacked three times and threw for only 120 yards. Brissett was 22 of 27 for 258 yards, but he was sacked five times and fumbled on one of them.

"You’ve got to take the ball away, you can’t give it away," Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski said. "All the little things, playing clean football, all those things."

INJURIES

Edwards' return is another chapter in Baltimore's ongoing injury saga in the backfield. He and J.K. Dobbins missed all of last season with knee injuries. Dobbins returned earlier this season but is now on injured reserve. Justice Hill returned from a hamstring injury Sunday and ran for 26 yards. ... Browns TE Pharaoh Brown was evaluated for a concussion, and LB Jacob Phillips had a shoulder injury.

CHAMPIONS HONORED

The Ravens honored their most recent Super Bowl championship team on the 10th anniversary of that 2012 season. Plenty of players from that team were on hand and introduced before the game, including Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, who did his famous dance while taking the field.

Running back Ray Rice, whose career ended in 2014 after video surfaced of him striking his fiancée in the elevator of a hotel, was also on hand and received a big cheer from the crowd.

Brandon Staley went from being incredibly risky to lucky in minutes.

Rookie Cade York missed a 54-yard field goal with 11 seconds left and Los Angeles held on for a 30-28 victory over the Cleveland Browns after Staley, the Chargers coach who loves to play loose, inexplicably gambled on a fourth down.

York's kick sailed right and allowed the Chargers (3-2) to escape with a win Staley tried to give away.

With his team at its own 46 and leading by two, Staley called a timeout but instead of punting had Justin Herbert attempt a short pass on fourth-and-2 for Mike Williams that fell incomplete, giving the ball back to the Browns with 1:10 left.

"We’re willing to live with that decision," Staley said. "There was no way I’m taking our offense off the field."

Cleveland had no timeouts and drove to the Chargers 35 to set up a game-winning shot for York, but the big-legged draft pick from LSU, couldn't convert. He earlier missed a 45-yard attempt.

Austin Ekeler rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored twice as San Diego, which came in last in the NFL in rushing, leaned on its ground game to win its second shootout in two seasons with the Browns (2-3). Los Angeles finished with 238 yards rushing, 174 more than its average.

The teams combined for 908 total yards and 53 first downs.

The most notable defensive play came when Chargers safety Alohi Gilman intercepted Jacoby Brissett's pass in the end zone with 2:44 left, setting up a confusing finish highlighted by Staley's brash decision.

Cleveland's Nick Chubb ran for 134 yards and had a 2-yard TD run.

Williams had 10 catches for 134 yards.

DOLPHINS' TEDDY BRIDGEWATER HELD OUT OF GAME VS JETS UNDER REVISED CONCUSSION PROTOCOL: REPORT

Los Angeles kicker Taylor Bertolet kicked a 27-yard field goal — in his NFL debut — early in the fourth to put the Chargers ahead 30-28. Bertolet was activated from the practice squad earlier in the week and played when Dustin Hopkins was ruled out with a quadriceps injury.

Ekeler had a 22-yard TD run and caught a 12-yard pass from Justin Herbert, who finished 22 of 34 for 228 yards, ending his streak of consecutive road games with at least 300 yards at seven.

The Chargers were clinging to their two-point lead when Brissett, who looked as if he could have run for a first down, forced a ball over the middle toward receiver Amari Cooper and was picked off by Gilman.

While Brissett has been OK while filling in while Deshaun Watson serves his 11-game suspension, Cleveland continues to have major issues on defense.

The Chargers pushed the Browns around up front and star defensive end Myles Garrett had little impact in his first game back after he was involved in a car crash.

BUGGING OUT

Players on both teams spent pregame warmups swatting away midges, those small, winged insects that swarm along Lake Erie during the spring and fall.

The bugs made a famous appearance at the 2007 baseball playoffs in Cleveland. New York Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain was, ahem, bugged by clusters of midges, which engulfed him and affected his performance on the mound.

ROAD SHOW

With his fifth straight 100-yard receiving game on the road, Williams tied Chad Johnson for the AFC record. The NFL mark is six, shared by three Hall of Famers: Jerry Rice (twice), Calvin Johnson and Michael Irvin.

INJURIES

Chargers: WR Joshua Palmer returned after leaving on the first series with an unspecified injury. ... Starting RT Trey Pipkins III (left knee) also came back after getting rolled up on from behind in the second quarter.

Browns: Pro Bowl CB Denzel Ward sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter and was placed in league protocol.

Falcons' clutch interception seals win over Browns

Arthur Smith said his Atlanta Falcons won't always be able to run the ball as effectively as they did against the Cleveland Browns, who were missing three starters on their defensive line.

Clearly, the Falcons coach will be happy when he can lean on his ground game.

Dee Alford intercepted Jacoby Brissett’s pass with less than a minute remaining and the Falcons held on to beat the Browns 23-20 in Sunday’s matchup of top-five rushing attacks.

Defensive tackle Grady Jarrett sacked Brissett for a loss of 8 yards on the play before the interception.

The Falcons outrushed the Browns 202 yards to 177 despite another strong game by Cleveland’s Nick Chubb.

"When you can run the ball and they know you’re going to run it, that speaks volumes for your guys," Smith said.

Cleveland didn't have All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett, who was hurt in a one-car crash last Monday. He suffered injuries to his shoulder and biceps, several cuts and bruises and a broken blood vessel in his left eye.

The Browns still held Atlanta's passing game in check. Marcus Mariota threw for 139 yards with an interception.

"I always felt the team that ran the ball better today was going to win, and it held true thankfully," Smith said.

The Falcons (2-2) spoiled the Georgia homecoming of Chubb, who ran for 118 yards and a touchdown with his high school team watching.

Younghoe Koo’s 45-yard field goal, his third of the game, with 2:28 remaining gave the Falcons the lead.

The Browns (2-2) moved past the 50 but on third and 23, Alford picked off Brissett’s pass intended for David Bell.

"It was a bad decision because he picked it," Brissett said.

Brissett, the Browns’ fill-in starter while Deshaun Watson serves his 11-game suspension for alleged sexual misconduct, completed 21 of 35 passes for 234 yards with no touchdowns and the interception.

"He did some good things," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. "He wants plays back like I want play calls back. That’s the really frustrating part of this game when you come up short, so we’ll look at it and grow from it."

Mariota called it a "complete team win."

"To be able to play all three phases that way I think is huge for us," Mariota said.

ATLANTA FALCONS 2022-2023 NFL SCHEDULE

Stefanski second-guessed himself for passing up points on Cleveland’s opening drive. On fourth and 3 from the Atlanta 4, Stefanski left his offense on the field and Brissett, forced to throw on the run, threw an incompletion.

"I need to own a large part of that," Stefanski said. "A lot of things you wish you could take back. ... We need to come away with points down there in the red zone, especially early."

Brissett said he appreciated the opportunity to go for the touchdown.

"We respect Kevin for giving us that trust," Brissett said.

The Falcons leaned on a balanced running attack led by rookie Tyer Algeier, who had 10 carries for 84 yards, including a 42-yarder. Caleb Huntley and Cordarrelle Patterson each ran for touchdowns.

Huntley had only one carry this season before he seized an opportunity in the second half. Huntley, who was on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster on Saturday, had eight carries for 54 yards, including his 5-yard scoring run that gave the Falcons a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland more than doubled Atlanta’s total offense in the first half — 245 to 120 yards — but had to settle for a halftime tie.

The equalizer was a lost fumble by Browns tight end David Njoku. Safety Jaylinn Hawkins forced the fumble, which was recovered by linebacker Rashaan Evans at the Cleveland 31.

Patterson’s 11-yard run three plays later gave the Falcons a 10-0 lead.

The Browns pulled even on Brissett’s 5-yard touchdown run and Cade York’s 29-yard field goal.

One week after setting a career rushing high for the second time in three weeks with 141 yards against Seattle, Patterson ran for 38 yards on nine carries. He was limited by a sore knee in practice most of the week.

HOMECOMING

Chubb, with his Cedartown (Georgia) High School team, family and friends watching from the stands, broke free around left end for a 28-yard touchdown run that gave Cleveland a 20-17 lead and pushed him over 100 yards. Chubb began the day as the NFL’s leading rusher. He worked out with his high school team, about an hour from Atlanta, in the offseason.

NEW STARTERS

Rookie Alex Wright and Isaac Rochell were fill-in starters at defensive end for Cleveland. Jadeveon Clowney missed his second consecutive game with an ankle injury. Garrett, who was hurt when he lost control of his Porsche while speeding, was ruled out on Saturday.

Browns defensive tackle Taven Bryan (hamstring) also did not play.

INJURIES

Browns backup running back Jerome Ford left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter.

Myles Garrett top of mind for Browns players as they prepare for Falcons

The Cleveland Browns are preparing for their Week 4 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, but it’s hard to ignore what’s top of mind for everyone in the organization.

Myles Garrett’s car crash on Monday after leaving the team facility in Berea, Ohio, could’ve been much worse than what actually occurred. Garrett and a female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and he was released from the hospital later Monday night — a massive sigh of relief for his teammates.

"At the end of the day, he’s OK and that’s all that matters for us," running back Nick Chubb told reporters Wednesday.

Chubb said he was at home when he heard the news about Garrett, and safety John Johnson III added that social media had told him what happened.

"I think I was a little late. I am just glad he is alright," Johnson said. "I heard, and [when] something like that happens, it is scary just for anybody. I heard he had a seat belt on. I don’t know if that helped out or not, but that was good. I am just glad he is OK."

MYLES GARRETT TO RETURN TO BROWNS PRACTICE, COACH ‘NOT RULING ANYBODY OUT’ JUST YET AHEAD OF FALCONS GAME

Hearing that Garrett’s car flipped over several times before coming to a rest in the single-car crash, Johnson is surprised that he walked out with a shoulder strain, biceps strain and minor lacerations.

"I don’t know the health of whoever his passenger was, but yeah, it is kind of crazy," he admitted. "They said it flipped over multiple times, so anytime that happens, you have at least some type of major injury. I am just glad he came out of there clean."

Head coach Kevin Stefanski began his press conference by saying, "I have spoken to him. He is staying home today resting, but we will see him tomorrow morning. Again, grateful that he is OK."

Garrett is expected back in the building on Thursday, and the 2-1 Browns are not going to rule out their best defensive player just yet.

"I am not ruling anybody out Wednesday," Stefanski said. "We will kind of do what we always do, which is take in information every single day.

"I think you take everything into account," Stefanski added when asked about the trauma that comes with a crash like this. "Like we do with anything, it is case-by-case basis."

The crash is still under investigation, but the Ohio State Highway Patrol does not suspect impairment from drugs or alcohol and said both Garrett and his passenger had their seat belts fastened.

Steelers' Mitch Trubisky will remain starting quarterback after tough loss to Browns, Mike Tomlin says

Mitch Trubisky will remain the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback despite a rough start to the season, head coach Mike Tomlin said following the team’s 29-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns Thursday night, adding that it was a "collective" breakdown that resulted in the Steelers poor performance in the second half.

In a brief press conference to reporters following the Steelers second straight loss of the season, Tomlin repeatedly said that Pittsburgh’s inability to stop three-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb was their greatest mistake.

"If you can’t slow down Chubb, man, you can’t beat this group. And we kinda knew that and we didn’t get it done. So we’ve got to own the outcome, and we will. So there’s not a lot to really talk about," Tomlin said.

NICK CHUBB RUNS THROUGH STEELERS’ DEFENSE AS BROWNS WIPE OUT DIVISIONAL RIVAL

"I thought they controlled the game. They possessed the ball. Nick Chubb controlled the game."

Tomlin was asked specifically about potentially reevaluating Trubisky, who just last week was at the mercy of his own fans who chanted for rookie Kenny Pickett to be put in.

"I’m not in that mindset. I’m interested in reviewing his tape and looking at the totality of it and figuring out how we collectively get better. The answer to that question is definitively no," Tomlin said.

"I thought he made some plays, but we all collectively came up short. So that’s how we measure performance. Winning is our business, and we didn’t handle business."

Trubisky, 28, played solid in the first half of the game but the Steelers offense was not able to make much of an impact despite a one point lead to end the second quarter. Pittsburgh managed just 54 yards on its first three possessions in the second half.

"We’re getting there, just not where it needs to be," Trubisky said after the game. "We didn’t hit on the plays we needed to in the second half. Scoring three points in the second half isn’t going to do it for us."

Trubisky finished 20-of-32 for 207 passing yards and no touchdowns, but the Steelers' biggest problem was converting on third down (1-9).

"We got to look at this tape and learn and get better – and get better very fast," Tomlin said.

Nick Chubb runs through Steelers' defense as Browns wipe out division rival

The Cleveland Browns were quickly able to wash away their bad loss to the New York Jets with a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, 29-17, on Thursday night.

It was a similar scenario to Sunday against the Jets, though, as the Steelers tried for the onside kick with less than two minutes to play and a six-point lead for Cleveland. But an offsides penalty wiped away the attempt, and the Browns finished out the game without a crazy comeback. In fact, they collected a last-ditch lateral play that went awry for Pittsburgh in the end zone to cap the win.

Nick Chubb was the tone setter on offense for the Browns. He had yet another great game on the ground, charging his way through the Steelers’ defense. Chubb’s second-half touchdown made it a two-score game in favor of the home team, and he finished with a game-high 113 yards on 23 carries.

Chubb had 87 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets on Sunday and totaled 141 yards on 22 carries in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett was very efficient for Cleveland, going 21-for-31 for 220 with two touchdowns and no interceptions thrown.

In the first half, it was the Browns that got on the board first thanks to a mismatch that wide receiver Amari Cooper exploited. His defender gave too much space near the goal line, and a quick slant was right on the money from Brissett for the touchdown.

Cooper finished the game as leader in receiving yards with 101 on seven catches with the score.

BROWNS' ANTHONY WALKER JR SUFFERS LEG INJURY, STEELERS' CHUKWUMA OKORAFOR RIPPED FOR UNNECESSARY EXTRA EFFORT

The Steelers ended up answering right away following the Cooper touchdown, and it was rookie wide receiver George Pickens who hauled in an impressive one-handed catch down the right sideline for 36 yards. It was a catch that was reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr.’s famous catch in 2014 against the Dallas Cowboys, but while that one was a touchdown, Pickens’ grab got the Steelers going on the Browns’ side of the field.

A few plays later, Najee Harris, who ran for 56 yards on 15 carries while catching three balls for nine yards, would rush his way into the end zone to make it a 7-7 game.

From there, it was a back-and-forth shootout as both teams traded touchdowns again on their next drives.

David Njoku went up the ladder to snatch a Brissett pass in the end zone in 1-on-1 coverage for a seven-yard score. But rookie kicker Cade York, who missed an extra point in the team’s loss to the New York Jets that ended up being a decisive one in the end, missed another to make it 13-7.

STEELERS' GEORGE PICKENS MAKES INSANE ONE-HANDED CATCH VS. BROWNS

Chris Boswell would kick his extra point in after Trubisky rushed into the end zone, giving the Steelers a 14-13 lead.

But the Steelers couldn’t find the end zone in the second half, and after that Chubb touchdown, it was all the Browns needed to take the division win for themselves.

The Browns will look to keep their momentum going on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on some long rest for next week.
