FBI receives DNA data from hair sample in Nancy Guthrie case: sources

The FBI has received DNA evidence recovered from the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, including test results from a hair sample, sources familiar with the investigation told 91�� Digital.

A source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed that investigators had collected DNA, including hair, from Guthrie's home and shared it with the FBI. It was expected to undergo more advanced testing.

CeCe Moore, a leading investigative genetic genealogist at Parabon Nanolabs, said a hair sample is unlikely to be part of the mixed DNA sample investigators were having trouble with.

"Not after it is cleaned for contamination," she said. "They have that process in good shape, but it can take some time."

A Pima County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) spokesperson said that they've been "sharing a lot of things" with the FBI lab since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation.

"PCSD has worked with the FBI since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation. This is not new information," the department wrote on X. "The private lab we utilize in Florida continues to share information with the FBI lab & other partner labs across the country. DNA analysis remains ongoing."

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously said DNA recovered from the scene had not yet led police to a suspect in the Feb. 1 kidnapping of the 84-year-old mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Earlier in the investigation, the sheriff's department sent a sample to the FBI to check against its CODIS database. That came back without a hit, and authorities later ruled out a connection to the case. There was also another mixed, partial sample that was not strong enough to develop a profile suitable for CODIS.

More than 11 weeks after her disappearance, it remains unclear what answers that sample may be able to provide. Based on how long it’s taken, experts believe it is a complex mixture containing DNA from three or more people.

"I would assume it would be Nancy plus two or more unknowns," said Moore.

At least one of the contributions came from a male, authorities said previously.

Other DNA has already been processed. Blood on the front porch traced back to Guthrie. The lab also tested a suspicious glove recovered about two miles from her home, which authorities said appeared similar to those worn by a masked suspect on Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera.

The glove provided no answers after it did not match any known criminals in the FBI’s CODIS database and did not match any other samples recovered inside the home.

It was business as usual for NBC’s Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday.

Guthrie returned to work on Monday after more than two months away following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. On her first day back, the "Today" anchor donned yellow in support of her mother while sitting next to Craig Melvin, who wore a yellow tie and ribbon pin to match. The studio was also decorated with yellow flowers. Savannah Guthrie acknowledged prayers and letters from fans and declared it was "good to be home."

For her second day back, the bright yellow that had emerged as a symbol of support for Nancy was absent from their outfits as the co-anchors focused on presenting the news. Guthrie wore pale pink and Melvin's tie was purple. Some yellow flowers were still visible in the background of the set on Tuesday, but it was noticeably scaled back compared to Monday and the yellow ribbon pins were gone.

NBC’s Savannah Guthrie largely kept the focus on the news during her highly anticipated return to "Today" on Monday after a two-month absence as the search for her missing mother continues.

Guthrie was poised during her return, which came 64 days after her mother, Nancy, went missing from her Arizona home. At 8:30 a.m. ET, 90 minutes into her return, Guthrie went outside to join the crowd gathered in the plaza outside the show’s Rockefeller Center studio.

"These signs are so beautiful. You guys have been so beautiful, I received so many letters, so much kindness, and my whole family, we feel it, we feel your prayers. Thank you so much," Guthrie said as she teared up.

Guthrie then acknowledged a fan wearing a shirt that said, "Welcome home Savannah," and took selfies with members of the crowd. She never mentioned her mother by name during the show.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her home in Tucson's upscale Catalina Foothills neighborhood in the early hours of Feb. 1, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI.

She was last seen there just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, when a relative dropped her off.

In the weeks after her suspected abduction, authorities struggled to publicly identify a person of interest, suspect or any vehicles connected to the crime.

Guthrie is last seen at her residence in the Catalina Foothills Saturday evening, when a relative dropped her off at home, according to Sheriff Chris Nanos. Two minutes later, her garage door closes.

It shows a masked man, wearing long sleeves and gloves, carrying an Ozark Trail backpack and what appears to be a holstered pistol.

2:12 a.m.:

A security camera detects an unidentified person's presence.

Relatives arrive at the home to find her missing and blood drops on her front porch. They placed a 911 call 7 minutes later, and deputies arrived at 12:15 p.m.

8:55 p.m.:

PCSD announces a search and rescue effort involving helicopters, infrared cameras and drones. They found no trace of her.

"Guthrie is 84 years old and is not of good physical health, and so naturally that’s a great concern," Nanos said. "This is very concerning to us. We don’t typically get the sheriff out at a scene like this, but it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house."

"We believe now, after we processed that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene that we do, in fact, have a crime," he says. "She did not leave on her own. We know that."

Nanos downplays concerns that Guthrie had become disoriented and wandered off, adding that she has limited mobility and has medication that she needs to take every 24 hours.

Authorities later remove a blue SUV from Guthrie's garage and towed it to an impound lot.

Savannah Guthrie issues another public plea for help bringing her mother home, thanking supporters around the country for their prayers.

"My sister and brother and I and our mom have felt this love, because we believe that somehow, somehow, she is feeling these prayers and that God is lifting her, even in this moment and in this darkest place," she says.

A second purported ransom deadline passes in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, despite the family's offer to meet the ransom demand.

Tuesday, Feb. 10:

12:52 p.m.:

FBI Director Kash Patel releases images of a suspect at Nancy's front door. The subject appears covered head to toe, wearing a ski mask and gloves, and what appears to be a holstered gun.

Savannah Guthrie later reposts the photos to her Instagram account, and shares a brief message with her followers.

"Someone out there recognizes this person. We believe she is still out there. Bring her home."

9:18 p.m.:

A delivery driver named Carlos Palazuelos, of Rio Rico, Arizona, is detained and questioned by authorities in relation to the case. An address associated with him, located in a tiny desert town just north of the border with Mexico, is searched.

However, several hours later, he is released without charges.

Wednesday, Feb. 11:

Authorities conducting a canvass of North Campbell Avenue find more than a dozen gloves, including one pair deemed of interest about 2 miles from Nancy Guthrie's home. They are tested for DNA, which ultimately is not a match in the FBI's CODIS database for known offenders and are traced back to a local restaurant worker. Authorities say the worker has no connection to the case.

Thursday, Feb. 12:

10:48 a.m.:

A white tent is erected outside of Nancy Guthrie's home, and investigators shuffle in and out. It is later revealed that the FBI sent experts to the scene to create a physical description of the man seen on her Nest doorbell camera video.

6:04 p.m.:

The FBI raises the reward for information that cracks the case to $100,000.

The agency also provided more descriptors for the man seen on doorbell camera footage outside her home the night of the suspected kidnapping, describing him as between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall.

The FBI also said he was wearing a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.

Friday, Feb. 13:

Nanos confirms investigators recovered DNA from the scene from an unidentified person, calling it a key focus of the investigation. He sends the evidence to a private lab in Florida.

That evening, a major SWAT operation involving officers from local departments and FBI agents targets a local ex-con named Luke Daley, who was pulled over at a Culver's restaurant near Guthrie's home as officers raided his mother's home near Orange Grove Road.

However, hours later, Daley is released without charges.

Sunday, Feb. 15:

The FBI says that gloves found about two miles from Nancy Guthrie's home appear to match that of the suspect seen on Guthrie's doorbell camera. They are sent to CODIS, the bureau's federal database of known offenders, to look for a match. They later came back with no hits and the gloves were ultimately linked to a restaurant worker with no connection to the case, according to authorities.

7:56 p.m.:

Savannah Guthrie pleads on Instagram for the return of her mother in the fourth video posted on her social media since her mother disappeared.

"I wanted to come on, and um, it's been two weeks since our mom was taken, and I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope, and we still believe," Savannah Guthrie said. "And I wanted to say to whoever has her or knows where she is that it's never too late, and you are not lost or alone."

Monday, Feb. 16:

The Pima County Sheriff's Department issues a statement on X ruling out Guthrie's adult children and their spouses as suspects in the case.

"To be clear…the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case," Nanos says. "The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case."

The family members are victims, too, he adds.

"To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel," he says.

Wednesday, Feb. 18:

Authorities confirm that there is no evidence to suggest that Nancy has been across the southern border into Mexico, adding that they had communicated with Mexican officials about the possibility.

Tuesday, Feb. 24:

Savannah Guthrie announces a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for her disappearance. She urges anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or contact her directly.

She also announces a donation of $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to support other families facing similar circumstances.

Savannah Guthrie releases a new video message pleading for her mother’s safe return and asking the public for help. In the video, she makes an emotional appeal for information as the search continues.

Separately, a neighbor reports seeing a suspicious young man in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood about two weeks before the 84-year-old is believed to have been abducted from her Tucson home.

Aldine Meister, who told 91�� Digital she has lived in the area for nearly 30 years, described the man as appearing out of place.

"He didn’t have your typical walking gear on, and he had his hat pulled really far over his eyes," Meister said.

Thursday, Feb. 26:

91�� Digital receives Ring surveillance video from a Catalina Foothills neighborhood resident that shows a dozen vehicles coming and going from Camina Real, a back road in and out of the community, including one that could potentially align with the timing of Guthrie's suspected abduction.

The house is roughly a seven-minute drive from Guthrie's address, according to Google Maps. One of the videos was recorded at around 2:36 a.m. on Feb. 1, which is roughly eight minutes after Guthrie's pacemaker last synced with her iPhone, according to the sheriff's timeline.

The FBI and PCSD were alerted to the video.

The route itself had been flagged to 91�� Digital by another neighbor — who said she also saw a suspicious man walking in the area on Feb. 2, around the corner from what appeared to be an abandoned car. The young mother asked not to be named due to concerns for her children's safety amid the unsolved kidnapping investigation.

Monday, March 2:

Savannah Guthrie, her older sister Annie, and brother-in-law Tommaso Cioni, make a solemn visit to the growing display of yellow flowers at Nancy's mailbox.

Yellow signifies hope for a safe return.

The trio, escorted by private security and local deputies, place flowers of their own. Annie also leaves a card addressed to her mother.

Law enforcement sources reveal that investigators have uncovered additional images from Guthrie's home security cameras — but nothing new from the night of the abduction and nothing considered a major break in the case.

The images were taken in the days and weeks leading up to her disappearance and were recovered from three separate cameras — at Guthrie's front door, over her driveway and in the backyard, a law enforcement official close to the Guthrie case tells 91��. There is no new video.

Nancy Guthrie's whereabouts remain unknown. The reward, risen to more than $1.2 million, remains unclaimed.

The message was shared by Good Shepherd New York during its digital Easter gathering on YouTube, where Guthrie delivered a deeply reflective message about navigating grief and unanswered questions during what she described as a difficult season.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen after she was believed to have been taken from her bedroom in northern Tucson, Arizona, around 2 a.m. on Feb. 1. Responding officers found a thin trail of blood droplets leading from the front door to the edge of the driveway. Her back doors were propped open, and a doorbell camera was missing.

Investigators later recovered home security footage showing a masked man on the doorstep, who has not been identified. The trail of evidence appeared to end at the driveway, and her whereabouts remain unknown.

"There are moments in which that promise seems irretrievably far away, when life itself seems far harder than death," Guthrie said. "These moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment."

Guthrie said that in her recent "season of trial," she questioned whether Jesus experienced the same kind of uncertainty she now feels, particularly the pain of not knowing what comes next or why suffering is unfolding.

"In those darkest moments I have thought, bitterly and perhaps irreverently, that I have stumbled upon a feeling that Jesus did not know."

She said her perspective began to shift as she reflected on the period between the crucifixion and resurrection, a span she described as often overlooked but central to understanding faith in moments of uncertainty.

"After Jesus died, after he breathed his last, what did he actually know?" Guthrie said. "Did he think his time in the grave would be a day or two or a thousand years? In the grave, does his agony seem indefinite to him? That torment of uncertainty? The way indefinite pain can feel eternal? Perhaps he did know this feeling after all."

Guthrie said that realization helped her reframe her own experience, describing life as existing in a kind of "meantime" — a period marked by waiting, unanswered questions and the absence of clear resolution.

She said that in those moments, people can feel unsure, lost, abandoned, disappointed and forgotten, even as faith calls them to trust in a future they cannot yet see.

Despite that struggle, Guthrie said her faith remains rooted in the belief that God is present even without immediate answers, offering comfort not through certainty, but through presence.

"It is the darkness that makes this morning’s light so magnificent, so blindingly beautiful," Guthrie said. "It is all the brighter because it is so desperately needed."

"So I close my eyes this morning and I feel the sunshine," she continued. "I see a bright vision of the day when heaven and earth pass away because they are one on earth as it is in heaven."

As multiple agencies collect tips in the Nancy Guthrie case, the man funding a $100,000 reward says Crime Stoppers — not the sheriff — offers the safest path for witnesses to come forward and an enticing one for people who want to get paid for credible information without giving their name.

"I believe that people will come forward if they’re anonymous and if they get a reward," said Wisconsin attorney Michael Hupy, who is the president of Crime Stoppers Milwaukee.

In Pima County, Arizona, the local Crime Stoppers affiliate is known as 88-CRIME, and the number is 520-882-7463.

Hupy has paid out $75,000 in rewards and posted another $200,000 in an effort to solve crimes in his hometown. But he told 91�� Digital this week he put up six figures in the Guthrie case due to the alarming circumstances of her disappearance.

She is believed to have been taken from her bedroom in northern Tucson around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1. Responding officers found a thin trail of blood droplets from her front door to the edge of her driveway. Her back doors were propped open. Her Nest doorbell camera was missing. And the trail seemingly ended there, until the FBI and Google recovered home security video showing a masked man on her doorstep — who is still unidentified.

"I was very sad that an 84-year-old woman in poor health was taken from her home, without her medication, her heart pacemaker stopped [synching], there's blood at the crime scene, and I thought something had to be done quickly," he told 91�� Digital. "And I thought this is a place I could step in, as I have in Milwaukee."

He also criticized the early handling of the investigation, saying the sheriff released the crime scene too quickly and made other missteps.

"I don’t think they secured the scene long enough to process it," he said. "They went in, looked, opened it up, then they had to come back later."

Hupy said he believes that the anonymity guaranteed by Crime Stoppers can't be matched by the county sheriff's tip line or even the FBI, whose tip line the Guthrie family has promoted publicly.

Tipsters can avoid being labeled "snitches" or facing retaliation, he said.

"That's the point of it," he added. "They get a reward anonymously, and they help society by getting criminals off the street."

And with the investigation entering its third month this week, Hupy said the chance that someone who knows something about Guthrie's suspected abduction told someone else has only increased.

"Somebody will learn something," he said. "An ex-girlfriend will get mad and tell the authorities or Crime Stoppers that her boyfriend confessed to her. A bartender will say a drunk came in and spilled the beans on himself or someone else. So the longer it goes on, the more likely we are to get the criminal."

Tipsters who use Crime Stoppers can also avoid getting in the middle as both the PCSD and FBI vie for information on the case independently, Hupy said.

"Avoid the bickering and avoid the nonsense and call Crime Stoppers," Hupy said. "We know how to handle this. We have solved thousands of cases, and we're not in the middle of something."

And because Crime Stoppers is not a government agency, Hupy said it is not subject to freedom of information laws and does not keep identifying records of the informants it pays.

Tipsters are not asked for their names and receive a unique code number when they give information instead, he said. If there's an arrest based on that information, they can collect by giving the code, not their name.

"If your tip results in an arrest, you get a reward," he said. "We don’t even know your name or your address or your phone number."

And there are no records kept of those details either, he added.

The national crime fighting organization has given out tens of millions of dollars in reward money over the years, he said.

The Crime Stoppers reward is $102,500 for information that leads to an arrest. The FBI is separately offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to either Guthrie's recovery or an arrest and conviction. And "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie is offering $1 million for information that brings her mother home.

"Come forward, you'll be anonymous... and if you have the right information, you'll get a reward," Hupy said. "It's that simple."

Embattled Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been called out by a local resident over an incident at the local airport, where TSA agents allegedly stopped him at the security checkpoint with a loaded, undeclared firearm in his carry-on bag.

And the hits keep coming, with a recent independent investigation into bullying and retaliation allegations against the sheriff finding that the "preponderance of the evidence" shows he abused his office for political gain during a close race in 2024 against former PCSD Lt. Heather Lappin.

Amid that contentious race, a woman named Cory Stephens complained to the county board of supervisors at a public meeting on Nov. 12, 2024 that the sheriff did not face the same consequences a regular citizen would have.

"If a private citizen had encountered that at the airport, the consequences would have been greater," Stephens, a longtime Tucson resident and president of the Conservative Coalition of America, told 91�� Digital on Friday.

Nanos' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident, which did not result in any charges.

Stephens said she found the incident alarming after hearing about it in local circles and was disappointed it received little attention in the media, so she brought it up during public comment at a board of supervisors hearing.

Nanos is facing heightened scrutiny amid the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie. While the complicated case remains unsolved, the sheriff's critics have seized on other issues — including lawsuits against him from his own current and former deputies and an allegation that he had lied about past disciplinary problems under oath.

"We as citizens want answers," Stephens said. "The safety of our community is at stake."

An incident report obtained by 91�� Digital from Nov. 6, 2024, shows a TSA X-ray technician saw the weapon in the sheriff's bag and flagged an officer.

"As a law enforcement officer, he should know the TSA rules, how to declare a weapon, secure it and follow the same rules as everyone else," Stephens said.

Airport police found five rounds in the magazine and another in the chamber.

The sheriff missed his flight, stowed the firearm in his vehicle and flew out later.

James Gagliano, a retired FBI agent and 91�� contributor, said he found the whole incident surprising because, as a law enforcement officer, the sheriff could've taken measures to fly with it legally.

"You declare yourself as a law enforcement officer ahead of time," he said.

The protocol requires confirmation between the TSA and the individual's agency, but typically allows active-duty personnel to fly with their weapons, he said.

After the X-ray tech found the weapon in Lane 1 at the Tucson International Airport's B Concourse, the first responding officer recused himself due to an apparent conflict of interest, according to the incident report.

The second officer brought Nanos to a private screening room, where he asked the sheriff where in his bag the gun was located, according to the incident report.

Nanos told him it was in a zippered pocket, where the officer removed it and found five rounds in the magazine and another in the chamber, according to the incident report.

"The firearm was in a hard plastic holster," the officer wrote. "The firearm was not artfully or purposely concealed."

The sheriff, of course, had no active warrants. But the officer read him his Miranda rights and informed his superiors as well as the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.

"Mr. Nanos was escorted off the concourse to place his firearm in his vehicle, and he was rebooked to fly out at a later time," the report concludes.

That appears to have been the end of the incident.

But it's one of many allegations against the sheriff to resurface during the stalled search for Nancy Guthrie.

Lt. Lappin's retaliation complaint led to an independent investigation by Northstar Employment & Legal Solutions, which cleared the sheriff of bullying allegations but found that "the preponderance of the evidence supports a finding that Sheriff Nanos used his authority and department resources for political gain."

He is also accused of violating department rules on courtesy and civility for allegedly putting confidential information about Lappin in a press release during the campaign.

However, while the review found the sheriff's actions "inconsistent with the listed policies," it also found that he is not subject to those policies because he is an elected official.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's department said Nanos has been made aware of the investigation's results.

"The findings do not support allegations of bullying but note additional concerns," she said in a statement. "The Sheriff has requested the full report for review."

PCSD declined to comment further, citing a pending civil lawsuit, and Lappin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last year, the Pima County Board of Supervisors referred Nanos to the state attorney general for investigation into whether he behaved inappropriately during the campaign. Lappin was suspended over what county officials said appeared to be unsubstantiated allegations and prevented from actively campaigning.

The sheriff is also facing a First Amendment lawsuit from another deputy who alleges he was retaliated against for supporting Lappin ahead of the vote.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors, which has a 4-1 Democrat majority, also moved unanimously last week to have outside counsel draft proposed questions for Nanos and plans to bring him in front of the panel to answer questions about his workplace history and other concerns.

The sheriff, who declined to comment on the board's decision, was not accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Guthrie investigation during the meeting.

"We have information that we need as an electorate to know who we’re voting into office," Stephens told 91�� Digital. "We need all the information that we could possibly have to put the right people into office."

Stephens, who unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the board as a Republican in 2024, has called on Nanos to step down following allegations that he had lied under oath in connection with a lawsuit from another deputy as well as on his application to join the department back in the mid-1980s.

"He was not properly vetted," she said.

The search for Guthrie remains unsolved more than two months after she is believed to have been taken from her Tucson home in the dead of night. No suspects have been publicly identified.

A masked intruder wearing long sleeves and rubber gloves appeared on Nest doorbell camera video at her front door around the time of her suspected abduction. Although the video has been widely circulated, it has not led to his identification.

And a DNA sample taken from inside the home containing genetic material from an unknown male has not yet been unraveled.

Savannah Guthrie will return to "Today" on Monday after a two-month absence since her mother, Nancy, went missing on Feb. 1.

While Nancy Guthrie has not been found, her daughter will attempt to return to work after an unprecedented ordeal that put the "Today" anchor at the center of a national news story.

Last week, Guthrie explained why she wanted to return to NBC’s flagship morning show during an interview with colleague Hoda Kotb.

Guthrie said she will not "be the same," but suggested "maybe it’s like that old poem: ‘More beautiful in the broken places.’"

Guthrie’s return is expected to draw a larger-than-usual audience, but it’s unclear how "Today" producers will navigate her comeback. She has gone from someone tasked with presenting the news to being at the center of a tragic national story within a matter of months.

Her tenure has been steady even during major bumps for the top network morning show, including the scandalous exit of Matt Lauer in 2017 and the disastrous ouster of Ann Curry in 2012.

Nancy Guthrie is believed to have been taken from her home against her will. Her son-in-law dropped her off at home around 10 p.m. the night before she went missing from the same home the "Today" co-anchor grew up in. In the early morning hours, a masked man was seen on her doorstep and appeared to be armed with a handgun.

At around 2:30 a.m., her pacemaker made its last sync with her Apple devices, indicating a potential timeframe for when she was taken out of the home. Her watch and iPhone were recovered inside.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to drag embattled Sheriff Chris Nanos into a hearing to answer questions, with help from outside legal counsel as scandals mount over allegations of perjury and retaliation against his subordinates — and as the search for missing Nancy Guthrie enters its third month with no resolution.

Nanos is facing renewed scrutiny from local leaders over his portrayal of his early career history as his department seeks answers in the disappearance of Guthrie, the mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie.

While some critics have blasted Nanos over his handling of the 84-year-old's suspected abduction from her home on Feb. 1, others have unrelated concerns — including allegations of perjury in a deposition tied to a recent First Amendment lawsuit filed by one of his own deputies.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to have the sheriff come in and answer questions about his work history along with issues regarding his management of personnel, internal affairs and other leadership issues in the department, public records show.

The sheriff, who declined to comment on the board's decision, was not accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Guthrie investigation during the meeting.

At a board meeting last week, the agenda included time for legal advice over how to address allegations of perjury against Nanos.

During a recent deposition, Nanos said he had never been suspended as a result of disciplinary action while working as a law enforcement officer.

According to public records published alongside the board meeting agenda, he had been suspended repeatedly as a police officer in El Paso, Texas, and resigned in lieu of termination before he came to Arizona in the early 1980s.

The documents indicate he was suspended for multiple weeks early in his career for things like excessive force, coming to work late, failure to report for duty and firing a gun inappropriately.

According to the Pima County Deputy's Organization, his department's labor union, he also said in his initial application that he left the El Paso Police Department in search of better pay and for personal reasons.

"He did not disclose that he resigned in lieu of termination," the union wrote in a Facebook post. "Lying on your application would prohibit anyone from being hired."

Timing for Nanos' appearance in front of the board was not immediately clear, but the board's outside counsel is expected to draft language for the request by April 7.

The tension with other elected officials within the county is a distraction for the sheriff that could have a negative impact on the investigation into Guthrie's disappearance, according to Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and former criminal justice professor.

The pressure could force an unnecessary error, he warned, and could also trickle down to the detectives on the case.

"When the executive is under stress, he continues to make micromanagement moves," he said. "Investigators lose the ability to think on their own and instead turn around and say, 'Well, let's just wait for the boss to tell us what to do.'"

When promoted to a supervisory position in his own career, Giacalone said, a key piece of advice he received was to let the detectives do their jobs without interfering.

The board's vote is the latest in a series of incidents involving the sheriff.

At a meeting on Nov. 12, 2024, the supervisors had initially planned to vote on a motion to censure the sheriff over his treatment of his rival during the 2024 race. She was Lt. Heather Lappin, then the Republican candidate for sheriff. He was also accused of taking unconstitutional actions against another political foe, Sgt. Aaron Cross, the president of the Pima County deputies' union.

The board also accused Nanos of using his office "in an attempt to smear his political opponent" and surmised that "it is clear that the board of supervisors must in fact act to ensure accountability."

But a deputy county attorney told the supervisors they didn't have the formal power to issue a censure and suggested they could face legal ramifications.

So the board, four Democrats and a single Republican, voted unanimously to request an investigation from the state attorney general or the U.S. Department of Justice.

"During the recent election, Sheriff Nanos placed two employees of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into potential violations of state and federal law, and internal policy. One of the employees was his opponent in the November General Election," letters from the board to both agencies read.

"Of concern to the Board of Supervisors is any potential violation of state or federal laws by Sheriff Nanos, which may include using his official capacity to impact the outcome of an election and/or repressing the rights specified under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution of an individual."

That was in the days after the election. Nanos has now served more than a year of his latest term.

Lead Nancy Guthrie cop had no homicide experience, sheriff benched top detectives: sources

As questions mount about Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos’ handling of the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, two sources with knowledge of the department say his management decisions initially pulled the most experienced investigators off the case.

Only one detective had more than three years on the homicide squad at the time of Guthrie's suspected abduction, the sources told 91�� Digital. The other five had less than two. The sergeant supervising them had been put in charge of the unit with only six months of experience as a sergeant and before he'd ever personally worked a homicide case.

There was another homicide detective with less than a year of experience, but he was transferred out.

Meanwhile, at least two seasoned homicide detectives had already been sidelined because they were not "favored" by Nanos' leadership team, according to one of the sources. They were sent over to the cold case division.

The sheriff later brought one of them into the Guthrie investigation after it went into a task force phase in late February. The task force, consisting of county detectives and FBI agents, is separate from the initial homicide squad assigned to the case.

Guthrie's whereabouts remain unknown, and Nanos has publicly maintained optimism that she could still be alive, telling 91�� Digital previously that "anything's possible." Homicide detectives, however, have been part of the case since the first week.

The homicide sergeant's apparent lack of experience is not necessarily a problem, either, according to Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and former professor of criminal justice.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"There are other experienced detectives that should be helping," Giacalone told 91�� Digital. "But also, [Nanos] has two major cities within striking distance, Phoenix and Tucson, who he could've asked for some assistance to come in and share their experience and knowledge with his people."

Doing so would've been a sign of leadership, he said.

"A lack of experience can be overcome by mentorship and training," he added.

At the start of the search for Guthrie, the county deputies union blasted the sheriff for a staffing decision that allegedly delayed the flight of the sheriff's high-tech search and rescue plane — with its pilot reassigned to regular street patrols.

"You have to understand, he terrorizes the entire department and makes examples out of anyone even perceived to be disloyal," one of the sources said. "I know that sounds hyperbolic. It is not."

Although Guthrie's whereabouts remain unknown after more than two months, Nanos said early on in the case that homicide detectives were involved in the case.

Separately, the county board of supervisors has hired outside legal counsel to guide them on how to respond to allegations that the sheriff perjured himself during a deposition in a First Amendment lawsuit brought against him by one of his own deputies.

"Crime Stories with Nancy Grace" host Nancy Grace said the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother is a painful reminder of her own fiancé’s murder nearly 50 years ago.

Grace's fiancé, Keith Griffin, was shot and killed by a former co-worker in August 1979 — just months before their scheduled wedding — after the man had been fired by the company.

"When my fiancé was murdered, I didn't even want to say words. I felt like going out in the dark in the woods and just howling like an animal. I didn't have words to say," she said in an emotional interview on a new episode of "Hang Out With Sean Hannity."

Her fiancé’s murderer was convicted in 1980 and served more than 25 years in prison before being paroled in 2006.

"It was so awful," she said. "Not just losing him, but to violent crime, stupid, senseless. For what? For nothing! I just couldn't take it in, especially the dichotomy of having grown up the way I did, in a very loving home. And then that, just before our wedding? It was just too much."

The true crime host said that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance resurfaced her grief, saying that Savannah Guthrie’s first televised interview since her mother’s abduction made her want to howl in pain all over again.

Grace explained how her fiancé’s murder motivated her career change as she sought to dedicate her life to helping crime victims.

Grace attended law school at Mercer University and later earned a Master of Laws at New York University, characterizing this era of her life as "a blur."

"If you look at my books, which I kept, there's watermarks on them where I would even study in the bathtub," Grace explained. "And when I would be tired or weary, just when I was prosecuting, I would think about Keith just looking at me with those big blue eyes and I would know it was my duty. This was my duty now."

For Nancy Grace, the Nancy Guthrie case is personal.

As a former prosecutor, she knows firsthand how mishandling of a crime scene early on can complicate the case if it ever gets to court — and it can put the search for Guthrie in jeopardy, too, she said in an interview on Sean Hannity’s new podcast, "Hang Out with Sean Hannity."

But the 84-year-old's suspected abduction also brought back painful memories from her own past — the murder of her fiancé during summer break from college in 1979.

When Guthrie's daughter, "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie, gave her first televised interview with colleague Hoda Kotb last week, the emotional account reminded Grace that "you're never the same" after a loved one is taken away.

The emotions ran raw, Grace told Hannity, but other aspects of the case pained her, too.

The sheriff released the crime scene back to the family before bringing the FBI into the case days later. In the interim, delivery drivers and journalists walked up to the front door, dropping off parcels and taking photographs.

"By destroying the crime scene and by releasing the crime scene too early, they destroyed a lot of evidence," she said.

"People called them 'missteps,' that is certainly putting perfume on the pig, isn't it?" Grace said. "That's a euphemism, 'missteps' — they're screw-ups. The feds wouldn't have done that."

Then, as the special agent in charge of the FBI's Phoenix office was with the Guthrie family filming a video response to a ransom demand that authorities viewed as potentially credible, the sheriff was caught on camera enjoying an Arizona Wildcats basketball game.

Hannity noted that once the FBI did get involved, the bureau worked with Google to obtain imagery from Guthrie's missing Nest doorbell camera that the sheriff's department had not been able to recover.

"I don't like attacking the actual men and women that are doing the work. The fish stinks at the head, Sean," Grace said. "It's Nanos. He stinks. He's gotta go. But that's a distraction to finding Nancy Guthrie."

"When Savannah was talking...when she felt like it was her fault, she said, 'Oh, Mommy, Mommy, I’m sorry. I am sorry,'" Grace said. "It took me right back to that moment — those horrible moments — when I was lying there in the dark, feeling like howling, because there just were no words."

Grace's fiancé, Keith Griffin, was killed on his way to work during a break from college — months before they hoped to get married.

The 23-year-old had a summer gig on a construction crew, she said, and his killer had been fired from the same job before his arrival. Griffin went on a run to pick up drinks for his co-workers and bring them back to the rural job site, arriving in the owner's jacket and driving the company truck.

"The guy came up and just opened fire and shot Keith five times in the face, the neck, the head and the back," Grace told Hannity.

After his death, Grace dropped out of school. But eventually she returned, she said, motivated to help other crime victims.

Nancy Guthrie's suspicious disappearance sparked a harrowing, 12-hour odyssey for her daughter, "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie — and it's still not over nearly two months later.

In an emotional "Dateline" interview with NBC colleague Hoda Kotb, she described the frantic moments after learning her 84-year-old mother had vanished from her Arizona home, prompting a desperate cross-country trip to be with family.

The ordeal began after what had been an ordinary evening with her children at "Today" co-host Carson Daly's home, she told Kotb last week.

"We had a beautiful, fun night together," she said, describing the visit.

Pima County deputies were at the home — where they found concerning evidence: blood on the front porch, the backdoors propped open, Nancy's valuables undisturbed but no sign of her whereabouts.

Annie and her husband, Tommaso "Tommy" Cioni, had already called local hospitals, hoping she'd been picked up by paramedics, to no avail. Savannah called them too.

"That was at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, but I was on a plane at 7:30 to Phoenix," she told Kotb. "And then a two-hour drive down to Tucson, and I probably got to my sister's house at 2 in the morning."

Their brother Camron, who lives in Vermont, had also flown in. After arriving late at Annie's, Savannah remembers speaking with authorities again on the phone.

The following morning, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos held the first of three news briefings he delivered in the first week after Nancy's suspected kidnapping. He hasn't held any since.

Off the bat, he had concerns, he said. He deployed search and rescue teams to scour the area — and also sent homicide detectives to the home.

"It's very concerning what we're learning from the house," he told reporters.

Nancy had last been seen between 9:30 and 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, when her son-in-law dropped her off at home after dinner at Annie's, according to authorities.

Nancy was taken in her pajamas, Savannah said. She had no shoes on. And the suspected abductor or abductors left behind valuables, like her purse, phone and Apple watch, as well as medication her life depended on.

Soon ransom demands started coming in — although many are believed to be from impostors. But Savannah said at least two seemed credible to her family, and the siblings recorded video responses.

Savannah Guthrie will return to "Today" on Monday, April 6, NBC News announced on Friday.

Guthrie, who has been away from NBC’s flagship morning show since her mother, Nancy, went missing on Feb. 1, opened up about the decision during a multipart interview that has aired throughout the week.

"It’s hard to imagine doing it because it's such a place of joy and lightness, I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile, and when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer, and being there is joyful, and when it’s not, I’ll say so," Guthrie told colleague Hoda Kotb.

Nancy Guthrie is believed to have been taken from her home against her will. Her son-in-law dropped her off at home around 10 p.m. the night before she went missing from the same home the "Today" co-anchor grew up in. In the early morning hours, a masked man appeared on her doorstep. He appeared to be armed with a handgun.

At around 2:30 a.m., her pacemaker made its last sync with her Apple devices, indicating a potential timeframe for when she was taken out of the home. Her watch and iPhone were recovered inside. She called the home her mom’s "safe haven," and said it was "really hard to see that violated" when she visited the crime scene.

Sutton said the "propped open" door is a critical detail.

"That’s an interesting piece of evidence that we had not heard before," he said, noting there has been no public indication of forced entry.

As "irresponsible and cruel speculation" has circulated, Savannah Guthrie said, she strongly defended her family against any suggestion of involvement.

"And no one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law. And no one protected my mom more than my brother," she said. "And we love her, and she is our shining light. She's our matriarch. She's all we have."

Sutton said while those statements are understandable, investigators cannot rule anyone out prematurely.

"Today" show host Savannah Guthrie opened up on Thursday in her first interview since her mother's disappearance about the multiple ransom notes that came after Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped.

"Today" co-host Hoda Kotb asked Guthrie about the ransom notes media outlets have received with regard to her mother.

TMZ and local outlets received ransom notes following Guthrie's disappearance that reportedly contained "sensitive information" that may only have been known to her captors.

"There are a lot of different notes, I think, that came, and I think most of them — it’s my understanding — are not real, and I didn’t see them. But, you know, a person that would send a fake ransom note really has to look deeply at themselves, to a family in pain. But I believe the two notes that we received, that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real," Guthrie said.

Guthrie revealed during the interview that her mother's doors were "propped open" as she described her and her siblings relaying to the sheriff that it was not likely Nancy wandered off at the start of the investigation.

Guthrie recalled being 16 years old and walking into her childhood home to see her mom praying because her father had passed away.

"It’s the house where all of our memories are. Good and bad," Guthrie said. "It’s hallowed ground. My mom loved and treasured that house."

Guthrie also said her mother taught her "a lot about grief" in the home.

"My father passed when I was 16 years old. He was only 49, and it was a shock," she said.

"I remember my mom saying, in those early days when daddy died, ‘You have to get up and decide and do – just decide and do,’ she had read that in a book and that meant a lot to her in her grief," Guthrie added. "I always remember that."

"She said, she’s gone," Guthrie told "Today" co-host Hoda Kotb. "And we – she was in a panic. I was in a panic. I’m, like, call 911. She’s like, I did. We’ve called them. They’re here. We thought that she must have had, like, some kind of medical episode in the night and that somehow, you know, the paramedics had come, because the back doors were propped open, you know, and that didn’t make any sense."

A neighbor of Nancy Guthrie says his dogs woke him in the middle of the night on two dates now under scrutiny, behavior he described as unusual, including the night authorities believe she was abducted.

Jeff Lamie, who lives a few houses from Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home, told "Crime Stories with Nancy Grace" that his dogs woke him and wanted to be let outside on Jan. 11 and again in the early morning hours of Feb. 1.

Lamie said the late-night activity stood out because it was not normal for his dogs.

"Oh, just waking me up at that hour," Lamie said when asked what was unusual. "That’s what was atypical. Actually, it hasn’t happened since."

"We’ve shared it and whether it helps with timeline or in any way, we hope it is of some value."

He said he only later realized the possible significance after investigators asked neighbors to review video.

"And human nature, we just filed it away and didn’t really think about this until we were asked to review our video and then had this recollection and saw this correlation, which was very unusual," he said.

His account comes as investigators increasingly focus on Jan. 11, a date Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said may be significant, though its role in the case remains unclear.

Nanos has also said investigators are focused on that date for a reason separate from the security footage already released.

The last time Guthrie’s pacemaker synced with her phone was 2:28 a.m., narrowing the window in which investigators believe she was taken.

Still, Nanos has emphasized there is no confirmation the individual seen in released video was at the home on Jan. 11, noting missing timestamps make it difficult to verify.

Despite weeks of investigation, no suspect has been publicly identified. Nanos has said forensic evidence collected inside the home, including DNA, has not produced a clear lead.

"We have so much in front of us. And we believe we have good evidence in front of us," Nanos told KOLD. "Will that dry up? Could I be wrong? Absolutely. Anything is possible, but we’re not giving up."

Over the weekend, Guthrie’s family issued a renewed plea to the public.

"No detail is too small," the family said, urging residents to recheck surveillance footage, messages and memories. "Someone knows something."

The FBI describes the suspect as a man about 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 with a medium build. Investigators have not ruled out that more than one person could be involved.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office is also warning about potential scams. In a notice posted Tuesday, the agency said there is no official GoFundMe or fundraising effort tied to the Guthrie investigation, and any claims suggesting otherwise are fraudulent. Authorities urged the public not to send money and to remain vigilant.

A reward of more than $1 million is being offered for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery.

Sheriff shrugs off missteps in Nancy Guthrie case, calls for captor to ‘let her go’ as family pleads for help

As the search for Nancy Guthrie nears two months, the sheriff leading the investigation is delivering a blunt message to whoever may be responsible while her family pleads for renewed attention to the case.

In a new interview with News 4 Tucson, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos defended his department’s handling of the investigation and insisted he has no regrets about decisions made early on, even as the case remains unsolved.

"Look, I have no regrets about my team and their efforts," Nanos said. "I don’t regret we let the crime scene go too soon or any of that."

Authorities have released doorbell camera images showing a masked suspect outside her Catalina Foothills home the night she vanished. Investigators say they continue to rely heavily on digital evidence, including cellphone data, surveillance video and other forensic analysis, but have not announced any arrests.

When asked what he would say to the person or people behind Guthrie’s disappearance, Nanos issued a direct appeal.

"Just give her up. Let her go," he said. "Take her to a clinic, a hospital. Drop her off. Just let her go."

As investigators continue their work, Guthrie’s family is urging the public to take a fresh look at anything that could help break the case.

"We desperately ask this community for renewed attention to our mom’s case," the family wrote in an Instagram post shared over the weekend. "Please consult camera footage, journal notes, text messages, observations, or conversations that in retrospect may hold significance."

The family pointed to several critical timelines, including the evening of Jan. 31, the early morning hours of Feb. 1 and the late evening of Jan. 11, suggesting previously released video of a masked man at Guthrie’s doorstep weeks before her disappearance could be significant.

"We continue to believe it is Tucsonans, and the greater Southern Arizona community, that hold the key to finding resolution in this case," the statement said. "Someone knows something. It’s possible a member of this community has information that they do not even realize is significant."

News 4 Tucson's special also highlighted the deep toll Guthrie’s disappearance has taken on Tucson, where colleagues, neighbors and strangers alike have rallied around her family with vigils, tips, flowers and handwritten messages of hope.

Former colleagues described Guthrie as a quiet but powerful force in southern Arizona, someone whose work left a lasting mark on public health, education and journalism. Jacqueline Sharkey, a former University of Arizona professor who worked with Guthrie for decades, remembered her as "this quiet leader who was so effective without ever working at it," according to the outlet.

Others recalled Guthrie’s role in helping save the poison information center at the University of Arizona, gathering more than 20,000 signatures before the internet era to keep the program alive — work that one colleague said went on to benefit thousands of Arizonans.

Dave Cuillier, who worked with Guthrie on the journalism school’s advisory council, called her "a huge champion of journalism and the University of Arizona" and said "she had a quiet power," according to News 4 Tucson.

The special also showed how support for Guthrie has spread well beyond her neighborhood.

One moment highlighted Melanie, who began making yellow ribbons of hope to keep attention on the case — something she and a friend had previously done for other missing women, including Laci Peterson and Natalee Holloway. This time, compelled by Guthrie’s story, she began making them again and sending them to Tucson.

The ribbons are now being worn by employees at El Charro, the Tucson restaurant where Guthrie had lunch with her daughters just months before her disappearance.

Ray Flores, president of Flores Concepts, said the case hit hard after staff realized "it wasn’t just a simple lost person issue." Though he said he did not know Nancy personally, he recalled seeing the closeness between Guthrie and her daughters during that visit and said the pain has been felt across the city.

"You could tell they were a very loving family," Flores said, according to News 4 Tucson. "Whenever you have that kind of pain hit, it affects you because you can feel it in your own community and your own heart."

El Charro workers have embraced the ribbon campaign as a way to keep awareness alive as the weeks drag on.

"We’re still supporting them, and we’re still thinking about them every single day," one employee said.

Beyond the ribbons and tributes, the special showed how Guthrie’s disappearance has left a lasting mark on her own neighborhood.

At the same time, neighbors in the Catalina Foothills have quietly organized their own efforts — gathering surveillance footage, cross-referencing video from nearby homes and passing potentially useful material on to law enforcement.

One neighbor told the station the group’s goal is simple: to help investigators by being "targeted and useful."

Savannah Guthrie and family members returned to the site earlier this month, visibly emotional as they took in the tributes left behind.

In their latest message, the family made clear that their focus remains singular.
