Deion Sanders comes to son's defense over 'sandwich' remark toward NFL reporter

Deion Sanders responded to Shilo Sanders’ "sandwich" comment toward NFL reporter Mary Kay Cabot on Friday.

The Colorado Buffaloes head coach was on an episode of "The Barbershop" when he spoke about it.

"We don’t talk about nobody," he said. "We don’t do nothing to nobody. I know Shilo had a little altercation that he spoke up for his brother. You’ve got to understand, man, that’s his brother.

"And God bless Mary Kay’s soul, that’s his brother. I mean, she said something, he said something, like media is different today. I know a lot of people don’t respect the old school. I do, because I grew up in that era that we didn’t have a say so. ... But Shilo spoke up for his brother, and he was ridiculed for that."

Shilo Sanders, who was briefly on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ roster last year before he was cut, reacted to Cabot predicted that Deshaun Watson would enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback on the Cleveland Browns’ depth chart over Shedeur Sanders.

He said, "Go make me a sandwich, Mary."

Shilo Sanders said he had an issue with Cabot giving her opinion over reporting facts.

"If you’re gonna be a reporter, then report facts. Whenever you have your opinion, and your opinion is always something hateful to Shedeur, then it seems like there’s something weird. Like there’s an agenda you have going on," he said in a livestream earlier this month.

Shilo Sanders doubles down on 'make me a sandwich' insult to female Browns reporter

Shilo Sanders isn’t doing his brother, Shedeur, any favors with his recent insults aimed at Cleveland Browns female reporter, Mary Kay Cabot.

In case you missed it, Shilo made what many are calling a misogynistic comment on an Instagram video of Cabot urging the Browns to make Deshaun Watson QB1 over Shedeur. Cabot, who has been covering the Browns since 1988, said, "I think they should declare [Watson] QB1 asap and let the first-team offense start to cook." She added, "There’s no time to waste."

In response, Shilo said, "Go make a sandwich Mary."

Rightfully so, the comment made a lot of buzz, which I think is not only detrimental to Shedeur, but showcases how many of his supporters have acted when it comes to criticism. There’s no better example than Shilo discussing the controversy he started, doubling down on his comments while streaming on Twitch.

"This is to Mary Kay," Shilo started his rant. "If you’re gonna be a reporter, then report facts. Whenever you have your opinion, and your opinion is always something hateful to Sheduer, then it seems like there’s something weird. Like there’s an agenda you have going on."

Shilo said the quiet part out loud, in my opinion. He’s claiming, like many other fans, and even those in the media, that any criticism of Shedeur is "hateful" and has some sort of sinister "agenda" behind it. When he says "agenda", it’s hard for me not to assume he isn’t talking about racism, because that has been the claim since Shedeur fell in the 2025 NFL Draft.

ESPN’s Ryan Clark stated before the draft, "It is about the fact that the color of his skin sometimes at the position can be questioned."

Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson said the NFL wanted to "make an example out of [Shedeur]" claiming he was told by a source that "The NFL… told other [teams] don’t draft him."

Skip Bayless claimed "it smells of racist undertones" and that there are "too many white people in charge in this league", when it came to Shedeur falling to the fifth round of the Draft.

Heck, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who just loves to say outlandish, unsubstantiated things and put his foot in his mouth, claimed Shedeur was being blackballed similar to Colin Kaepernick stating on X, "This kid is a first rounder. In a different way, this is Kaepernick all over again…..being kept out. A damn disgrace. I don’t care what anyone says!"

Former NFL MVP and frequent guest host on ESPN’s First Take, Cam Newton made an outrageous claim that the Browns head coach (at the time) was sabotaging Shedeur. "I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I do not think Kevin Stefanski wants Shedeur Sanders to succeed in Cleveland," Newton pronounced.

This list goes on and on, but you should get the point.. Shedeur’s brother, many in the media and countless fans online want the sports world to believe that the NFL, some in media, and coaches are conspiring against Shedeur, hence the "agenda". They also claim that criticism is, more often than not, "hateful." That’s weak, unfounded, and illogical.

The fans are even worse online. That’s why I like to compare Shedeur Sanders’ fans to Angel Reese fans. They claim, or at very least insinuate, that any and all criticism of each player has some sort of racist, micro-aggressive undertone to it. They want the sports world to believe they are perpetual victims of a foundational prejudice within an unfair system, in my opinion. I call nonsense.

What Shilo Sanders is doing is refusing to face the facts, while hypocritically telling Cabot to stick to the facts in her reporting.

Here are the cold, hard facts. Out of 42 eligible NFL quarterbacks in the 2025 season, Shedeur Sanders ranked 41st in passer rating. Sanders threw more interceptions than touchdowns. He had the fifth-worst QBR since QBR became a stat in 2026, making it the worst QBR of any Browns QB with at least six starts IN THE HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE. Sheduer showed flashes, but he performed poorly overall. The fact that he was named to the Pro Bowl put the nail in the coffin of that game and his addition made a mockery of that accolade.

This season, Shedeur is not a shoo-in for QB1, and his poor performance in his rookie season is to blame. Additionally, comments and controversies like this involving his family, only make Shedeur a bigger distraction than he has been in the past.

Shilo went on to state, "There’s plenty of women in this field that take this serious and take reporting football serious and actually do homework and study the game, get the statistics right, and get the news right. But with you, there’s so much emotion." Then Shilo wrapped up his ironically emotional rant by stating, "We don’t care what you think is gonna happen… For all the women that actually take the time to do their research and actually be real reporters, and real journalists, then that’s gonna make them look bad."

Shilo will only accept praise of his brother from media. Any criticism puts the credibility of the journalist in question. That’s ridiculous, especially based on the facts of Shedeur’s play.

Cabot didn’t take the bait and instead, took the high road in response to Shilo’s sandwich comment saying she believes she’s "an inspiration for lots of women and young girls that you can go out there and do a good job in man’s world."

Cabot commented further on Cleveland sports radio 92.3 The Fan saying, "And I know that there are so many women who have joined the football world, especially because of some of the things that I’ve been able to do over the years… I’m just happy that I have been able to help set the tone and open some doors in that way, and I know that will continue, and that’s just how I feel about that."

Shilo should do his brother a favor and use some discernment before he makes any more comments that inevitably will make Shedeur even more of a distraction and a talking point for the media than he already is. But, I wouldn’t count on it.

Browns coach Todd Monken keeping QB competition open amid uneven practice reps, Shedeur Sanders buzz

The Cleveland Browns entered last season with one of the NFL's more crowded quarterback rooms.

Shedeur Sanders took over as starting quarterback in Week 12 last season, and after two more starts, he was named the starter for the remainder of the season.

Dillon Gabriel moved to a backup role as Deshaun Watson remained on the physically unable to perform list, even after the team opened his 21-day practice window in December.

Sanders, Gabriel and Watson all return in 2026, but it remains unclear which quarterback will be under center when the regular season begins this fall.

Browns head coach Todd Monken reiterated his stance on maintaining an open competition for the starting job, telling Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan it's premature to name a starter.

"It’s my job to let it play out," Monken said.

Monken’s comments Friday are in line with his previously stated belief in letting players decide who plays and giving all involved opportunities as the competition evolves.

The remarks also follow a report that Watson leads the race for the starting job. They also come after Shilo Sanders downplayed the report and publicly expressed support for his brother Shedeur’s bid for QB1.

Monken, who was hired in January, is expected to introduce a new offensive system in Cleveland. The first-year coach has indicated he prefers one quarterback to separate himself from the group.

The Browns held a three-day voluntary minicamp shortly before the 2026 NFL Draft. At the lone practice open to the media, Watson led the quarterback rotation in most drills, but Monken said the plan called for Sanders to get more reps overall.

"I’m not there yet, so I can’t say (there’s a leader)," Monken added. "We’ve been on the field three days."

The Browns are scheduled to begin organized team activities in mid-May. In June, the team will hold a mandatory minicamp. The offseason program then concludes before training camp begins in July.

The Browns drafted quarterback Taylen Green in the sixth round in last week's draft.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Browns general manager Andrew Berry cautioned that there's no rush to decide on a starting quarterback.

"We don't have to make that decision anytime soon," Berry said at the time. "I think any player that we have in that room we would expect to compete to earn a role. Those two would be no different."

The Browns went 5-12 last season.

Deshaun Watson has 'inside track' to be Browns' Week 1 starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders: report

By the time the NFL season begins, Deshaun Watson will not have taken a snap in nearly two years.

Since rupturing his Achilles, the Cleveland Browns have drafted three quarterbacks, including Shedeur Sanders, who took the reins to close the 2025 season after Dillon Gabriel, who started after Joe Flacco was traded, suffered a concussion.

However, Cleveland.com reported Wednesday that Watson still has the "inside track" to be named the Browns' Week 1 starter, citing sources.

On the first day of the team's minicamp, Sanders was set to get more reps with the first team, but Watson wound up getting more. On day two, Watson was the first quarterback to get first-team reps and again had the most of anyone.

Gabriel, the outlet said, did not get any, and Watson "had earned the QB1 snaps by looking the part of a starting quarterback."

Despite drafting Gabriel in the third round last year and Sanders in the fifth, Cleveland added one more quarterback to its crowded room last week in Arkansas' Taylen Green.

It is a young Browns roster, as it appears their three main playmakers are either in their first or second seasons (running back Quinshon Judkins is entering year two, while the Browns drafted wide receivers at 24 and 39). The Browns also went offensive line with the ninth pick. So, as Cleveland.com mentioned, the veteran in Watson may be better equipped for those types of surroundings.

However, he is entering the last year of his $230 million contract that the front office has admitted was a "swing and a miss."

Quarterback play for Cleveland was poor throughout the season no matter who was taking snaps, ranking 31st in completion percentage (57.89%) and passing yards per game (165.1). Sanders' three wins as a starter were more than Gabriel and Flacco combined, but his 56.6 completion percentage was the lowest, as was his 4.7 interception percentage, keeping the quarterback competition open.

Since Watson was acquired ahead of the 2021 season, he has played in 19 of a possible 85 games, throwing for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while facing injuries and a suspension amid sexual assault allegations.

Browns draft another quarterback, making Shedeur Sanders' starting job even less secure

The Cleveland Browns have added to their already crowded quarterback room.

In the sixth round, just a year after taking both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders while waiting on Deshaun Watson’s health, they selected Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green.

The Browns’ quarterback room was so crowded last year that Week 1 starter Joe Flacco was traded during the season.

Of course, the Browns did that to get a look at their young talent, but they also had Kenny Pickett last offseason, who was traded.

Last year, the Browns drafted Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round, and Sanders had an unprecedented free fall. However, they wound up taking Sanders, too, in the fifth round.

Gabriel got the nod after Flacco was traded. But after Gabriel sustained a concussion, Sanders replaced him and remained the starter after winning his first NFL start.

In four seasons as a starter at both Boise State and Arkansas, Green completed 60.1% of his passes for 9,662 yards, 59 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. He led the SEC with 13.7 yards per completion last season and led the Mountain West in that same category (14.5) in 2023.

Browns owner gives optimistic outlook for injury-riddled Deshaun Watson

Deshaun Watson’s tenure with the Cleveland Browns has been one to forget.

The Browns acquired Watson from the Houston Texans before the 2022 season and signed him to a five-year, $230 million deal, marking the richest deal for a quarterback at the time. But his lack of availability due to injuries and his play on the field have forced the organization to restructure his deal.

He’s only played 19 games for the Browns over his first four seasons, while Cleveland has trotted out multiple quarterbacks, including Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and others, to try to find a temporary fix to a long-term problem.

Still, Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam has an optimistic outlook for Watson.

"Deshaun has a great chance, fresh start, offensive-minded coach, who has in his past been able to work with all kinds of different quarterbacks and make them successful," he told reporters at the NFL annual meeting on Monday, via ESPN.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry previously said that each Browns quarterback on the roster will compete for the starting job. Right now, the depth chart includes Watson, Sanders and Gabriel. It’s unclear if Cleveland would target another quarterback in the upcoming draft.

Watson missed the entire 2025 season after he re-ruptured his Achilles in the offseason that year.

Browns restructure Deshaun Watson's contract again as he enters final year of catastrophic deal: report

As Deshaun Watson enters the final year of his $230 million deal, the Cleveland Browns are doing some housework.

Last year, co-owner Jimmy Haslam all but admitted regret over acquiring Watson and then inking him to his fully guaranteed deal, calling it a "big swing and a miss."

During that offseason, the Browns actually restructured his contract twice in a three-month span — and they did so again this week.

According to Cleveland.com, with Watson originally having a cap hit of over $80 million, the Browns are converting up to $44.745 million of his $46 million base salary into a restructure bonus.

The move will free up $36 million in cap space as the official league year begins next week. It makes Watson's base salary the veteran minimum of $1.255 million.

The Browns are also expected to make a similar move with cornerback Denzel Ward, whose base salary is just shy of $17 million.

Legal tampering begins on Monday, and free agents can sign deals at 4 pm. ET on Wednesday.

Browns head coach Todd Monken praises Sanders' 'elite playmaking ability' ahead of QB competition

One of Todd Monken’s main priorities as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns is figuring out who will be his starting quarterback for Week 1.

Monken has three options to look at this season — Deshaun Watson, who wasn’t available all last season due to injury; Dillon Gabriel, the team’s third-round pick in 2025; and Shedeur Sanders, the Browns’ starter at the end of last season.

Monken hopes one of these quarterbacks can set themselves apart over time. But all eyes will be on Sanders, who started the final seven games of the 2025 season for the Browns, to emerge as the starter for Monken.

During the NFL Scouting Combine this week, Monken was asked about his quarterbacks, specifically whether he sees Sanders as the team’s starter.

"I think what you see is elite playmaking ability," Monken said, according to the New York Post. "That’s in him. You’ve seen it, we’ve seen it. You saw it in college. You saw it on tape last year. Sure, there’s a ways to go, but what rookie isn’t? What first-year player doesn’t have a long way to go? I’m excited to get started with him and all of our quarterbacks and all of our players."

BROWNS TO HOLD OPEN QB COMPETITION BETWEEN SHEDEUR SANDERS AND DESHAUN WATSON, GM SAYS

Sanders went 3-4 over those seven starts, while Gabriel was 1-5 after taking over for Joe Flacco, who was traded to the division rival Cincinnati Bengals after an injury to starter Joe Burrow.

It’s worth noting the Baltimore Ravens, with Monken as offensive coordinator under former head coach John Harbaugh, wanted to draft Sanders to back up Lamar Jackson, the team’s two-time MVP quarterback. However, Sanders made it known he wished to go somewhere in the draft where he had a chance of being the team’s starter.

Sanders was never going to jump Jackson on the depth chart in 2025 and beyond, so the Browns eventually took him in the fifth round after a shocking fall down the draft board last April.

Watson is in the final year of what has been a disastrous $250 million, fully guaranteed contract for the former Houston Texans ace signal-caller. While playing in three Pro Bowls during his time in Houston, Watson has played just 17 games during his time in Cleveland, which included suspensions on top of his injuries.

Yet, Monken believes a player who has shown elite talent on the field, no matter when it was, deserves a shot.

"I think you are always going to give them the benefit of the doubt that somehow we might be able to get that out of them again," Monken explained. "I think that’s how you should look at every player. I’m going to let it play out."

In his 17 games with the Browns, Watson is 9-10, which includes a 1-6 mark in 2024 before an Achilles injury ended his season.

Sanders threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his seven starts for Cleveland last season. He was eventually named a Pro Bowl replacement.

Speaking at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis Tuesday, Brown general manager Andrew Berry left the door open for Watson to compete with Sanders for the starting job next season.

Berry cautioned that there's no rush to decide on who will QB1 when next season kicks off.

Sanders took snaps with the designated second-team for the majority of the Browns' minicamp and training camp last year. He went 3-4 as a starter in 2025. Berry is optimistic Sanders can continue to improve.

"I think the biggest thing that we want to see from Shedeur is just continued growth," Berry said. "I think he grew a lot from Start 1 to Start 7. I think certainly playing more efficiently, not putting the ball in harm's way as much would be important while maintaining the ability to produce out of structure and generate explosive plays."

The Browns dismissed Kevin Stefanski in January and brought in Todd Monken, and Berry said he wants Sanders to acclimate to the new system.

"You're not going to see all of that in the upcoming months because we're not on the field. So the biggest thing that he can do is learn the new offense, get in with the coaching staff once our offseason program starts, continue to work on his body physically and then make strides when we actually get on the grass."

Watson has appeared in just 19 games in the three years since he inked an unprecedented fully guaranteed $230 million contract with the Browns. Watson is reportedly owed $46 million next season and carries the largest salary cap hit in the league in 2026.

Berry confirmed Watson continues to work through the rehab process. "Deshaun's been working really hard, he's been working his tail off," he said. "And like I said, we're excited to go in mid-April with all of our players across the roster."

But while filling that vacancy will be atop the priority list for GM Andrew Berry, reporters were also wondering what the team’s thought process is for the quarterback situation heading into 2026.

More specifically, what does Berry have in mind for Shedeur Sanders, the polarizing rookie who started the final seven games for Cleveland, finishing with a 3-4 record.

During his end-of-season news conference Monday, Berry was noncommittal while discussing Sanders.

"We’re going to do our work on the quarterback market," Berry replied, per the New York Post. "It’s too important of a position, and it’s something that has to be solidified."

After another lackluster season, it’s fair for Berry to want to assess everything, including the quarterback position, as he heads into yet another important offseason. The Browns’ new head coaching hire will have a say as well in what quarterback will be in place for Week 1 in September.

"I can’t sit here and tell you today whether the solution for, or the starter in 2026, is internal or external. But it’s something that we’re going to work through over the next several weeks. And, quite honestly, the new head coach will also have a lot of input into that as well."

The quarterback position in Cleveland had a national spotlight on it after the Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round — he was a projected first-rounder that shockingly fell to Day 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft — and Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round.

Veteran Joe Flacco was the Week 1 starter for Stefanski. But after Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, Gabriel was the next man up for the Browns. Gabriel, though, didn’t have success in his six games starting, going 1-5 in his time as QB1.

After a concussion, Sanders took over and remained in place after winning his first career start against the Las Vegas Raiders. He threw for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his seven starts, while completing 56.6% of his throws.

Looking ahead to the 2026 season, the Browns also have Deshaun Watson under contract, and the embattled quarterback is expected to be returning, according to Berry.

The Browns have the sixth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and they could select a quarterback there.

With all these different factors, Sanders is in the mix as the potential starter for Week 1 next season, but he’s going to have to earn that spot.

"I’d say quarterback is the most important position in sports," Berry added. "We all know that. And part of the equation with quarterback is the evaluation part. Part of it is the development part, as well. It’s the most important part. It’s the hardest position to play.

"It can take time, but that’s the focus — solidifying that position. That’s the biggest thing that can lead to sustainable success. That’s priority No. 1. How we accomplish that with the combination of internal options, external veteran options, the draft, that remains to be seen. But priority No. 1 is finding the leader for the organization. That’s what our focus is on in the short term."

Berry said he saw promising development from Sanders in his first NFL season.

"I think we saw a lot of progress with Shedeur this year. I think that’s both mentally, physically and playing the position, He’s still very much a work in progress, like many rookie quarterbacks are," Berry said.

Browns make decision on $230 million quarterback as season winds down

The Cleveland Browns have made a decision on quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has not played this season due to injury.

Watson, whom the team activated at the beginning of the month off the physically unable to perform list, did not get added to the active roster at the conclusion of his 21-day window.

Watson had been doing individual drills and running the scout team offense since being activated, but head coach Kevin Stefanski said it felt like the "right decision" not to activate him.

"Yeah, he’s done a great job with everything that’s been asked of him. I’ve gotten to see him just work so hard, whether it’s in the training room, by himself in the indoors with the trainers, on the practice field now for the last bit. But it just felt like this was the right decision for him and for us, and his focus will continue to be to help this football team and continue to get healthy and get stronger and all those types of things," Stefanski said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Watson tore his right Achilles tendon in October and then re-tore it during rehab in January. Watson, who signed a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract in March 2022, has been a major disappointment.

The Browns have a 9-10 record in Watson’s starts, while he has completed 61.2% of his passes for 3,365 yards with 19 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

Just as Shedeur Sanders is settling in as the Cleveland Browns quarterback, the signal-caller the team signed to a $230 million deal is back on the field for the first time in over a year.

Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles tendon Oct. 20, 2024, and did so again in January, delaying his return.

But the Browns opened Watson's 21-day window to return Wednesday, just as Sanders is prepping for the third start of his NFL career.

"He’s been working so hard, rehabbing. So, finally, to get out there on the practice field with his teammates, go through individual, I think is really great for him," Coach Kevin Stefanski said. "Our focus is activating this practice window, seeing him on the practice field, getting him into individual, those type of things. He’s done everything that’s asked of him. He’s been so supportive in the meeting room on the game field with the players. Now he gets to go do that on the practice field."

Watson is 9-10 as Cleveland’s starter. He has 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a passer rating of 80.7. He's also unpopular among fans after the Browns sent five draft picks to Houston, including three first-round selections, and signed him to a fully guaranteed contract widely regarded as one of the worst in league history.

If Watson is not activated from injured reserve in the window, he will miss the entire season.

The Browns have reworked Watson's contract twice in three months during the offseason in a bid for some financial flexibility.

Watson is under contract for the 2026 season, and Dillon Gabriel is Sanders' backup. Sanders entered a Week 11 game after Gabriel sustained a concussion. Paul DePodesta brought his analytics strategies and expertise to the Cleveland Browns in 2016 when he was named the franchise's chief strategy officer.

DePodesta started a new chapter last week when he was named president of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies.

He has familiarity with the MLB, having previously worked for the then-Cleveland Indians, the Oakland Athletics and the New York Mets. DePodesta also spent a few seasons as the Los Angeles Dodgers' general manager. Amid his return to an MLB front office, DePodesta reflected on one of the more notable moves he helped orchestrate during his stint with the Browns – the blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson.

Watson has appeared in just 19 games in the three years since he inked an unprecedented, fully guaranteed $230 million contract shortly after the Houston Texans agreed to send him to Cleveland in 2022. The 32 games Watson missed were due to either suspension or injury.

The decision continues to face criticism, with many seeking to assign blame to one or more of the Browns’ decision-makers. DePodesta offered some context, recalling the decision to trade for Watson as a collective choice.

"Here’s what I would say, and I truly believe this," DePodesta told The Denver Post. "I believe that most of the decisions, especially the big ones like that, are organizational decisions, right? I'm not a believer in the 'King Scout' situation where there is one guy who makes every call… The jobs are too complex, the decisions are too hard. They impact too many different things. So I always think these sort of collective decisions, it can be hard to get unanimous [opinions] on those types of things. Everyone who was a part of that? We all own that. We just do, that's part of the deal."

The NFL suspended Watson for 11 games in 2022, but a shoulder injury cut the quarterback's season short in 2023. Last October, Watson was sidelined by a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Watson then re-injured the same tendon in January. The latest setback has sidelined the three-time Pro Bowler for all of this season so far, but Watson pushed back against that timetable.

"Everyone is doubting me. Everyone don't believe in me," Watson said in a video posted to his Instagram account in April showing him working out. "Everyone don't think I can get back to where I was. But I know, and I believe the work that I put in, that I believe in myself... I know I'm gonna be way better than before."

The 30-year-old added to his comeback argument by saying he doesn't "have anything pretty much to lose."

Watson has thrown 19 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in a Browns uniform. He finished his five-year stint with the Texans with 104 touchdowns against 36 interceptions.

Those impressive numbers came over just four seasons on the football field. Watson was ruled out of every game during the 2021 season following a trade request, which ultimately led to a standoff between the quarterback and the team.

Browns fan Jake Paul wants Shedeur Sanders as team's starting quarterback

Since the Cleveland Browns were reborn in the late 1990s, there has been very little to celebrate.

It got to the point where Cleveland native and Browns fan Jake Paul had his fandom in the balance a couple of years ago. In an interview with 91�� Digital in 2023, Paul said he was considering moving his fandom to the Cincinnati Bengals considering it had been "26 years of terror."

But he decided to hold on to his hometown boys.

"I never give up on them, even though they always give up on me," Paul said in an interview with 91�� Digital late last week. "But we’re still there rooting, I’m still a diehard. I’ll always be rooting for them."

Joe Flacco will be under center for the Browns when they begin their season on Sunday against those same Bengals Paul almost transitioned to. However, he wants someone else under center.

"I think Shedeur [Sanders] should be quarterback No. 1. Just because someone is getting paid the most doesn’t mean they should be starting," Paul said. "I think you should give the young kid a shot."

One of Sanders' bugaboos has been holding onto the ball for too long, but Paul thinks he has another skill that can make him the Browns' main guy.

"I think if Shedeur can learn to step up in the pocket, he should be the starting quarterback. Quarterbacks now gotta be able to run the ball, and he’s capable of that."

The Cleveland Browns quarterback tied the knot with longtime girlfriend, Jilly Anais, earlier this week.

The couple posted their wedding bands on social media, via the New York Post. Watson's shirt had the date of "07.02.25" stitched on his wrist.

The couple took a boat trip around Miami with some close family members to celebrate the marriage.

The Watsons got engaged this past March.

They posted a video to Instagram of themselves dancing outside their car on the road on Friday.

"We sailing away," they wrote.

After rupturing his right Achilles tendon for the second time in three months, it remains unclear whether Watson will miss out on the entire 2025 season. He was initially injured during an October game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he later ruptured his Achilles for a second time in January.

Shedeur Sanders enters crowded quarterback room as he starts Browns career

Shedeur Sanders was the 144th pick of the NFL Draft as the Cleveland Browns added him to their depth chart in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon.

The free fall lasted longer than expected, but Sanders finally found a home on the third day, starting the journey to become the team’s starting quarterback at some point during the 2025 season.

He will join a quarterback room that has Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson’s status in 2025 is murky at best after re-injuring his Achilles in the offseason. Watson suffered an Achilles tear last October.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry divulged his expectations for each quarterback the team brought in during the offseason.

"We expect every player to compete. Simple as that," he said.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked how he was going to ensure each of the four healthy quarterbacks were going to get a fair shot.

"We’ve talked about it. I mean there’s ways to do both I think," he said. "Obviously you may not divide them 25, 25, 25, but we feel really confident that we’ll have a plan that is fair to each player and fair to the team as well."

The Browns acquired Pickett in the offseason in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. He served as a backup for Jalen Hurts with the Eagles and received a ring when the team won the Super Bowl over the Kansas City Chiefs in February. He previously started with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the team selected him in the first round of the 2022 draft.

Cleveland brought Flacco back after he went to the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He took over for an injured Watson in 2023 and helped lead the Browns to the playoffs. Flacco won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2012.

The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round on Friday. He played his college ball at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Last year with the Ducks, he had 3,857 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes. He was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He also holds the FBS record for most touchdown passes thrown in a career.

Berry explained why the team decided to take two quarterbacks in this year’s draft.

"I think just like I could probably say the plan wasn’t necessary to take two running backs. Like, you envision how the draft could possibly play out, and then you just really adjust to what’s on the board," Berry said. And like I said, like we don’t really go into the draft saying okay, like, ‘hey, here are our needs and we’re just going to pick players at need positions.’

"If you do that’s typically how you make mistakes. So, there is a little bit of a flow to the weekend because the board does take different twists and turns as you go. Some expected, some unexpected and, ultimately, we try and do everything in our power to maximize the impact of the picks we have in aggregate. And part of the reason you have to do that is being flexible."

Sanders will have an uphill battle in an attempt to attain the starting job – and a roster spot – once the season begins officially later this year. However, it is far from impossible.

"I know I’m going to fit in perfectly," he told reporters. "I feel like it’s first getting in, showing respect to the vets, showing them I’m here ready to work. Show the coaches and have them understand, I’m here ready to work. So they could actually understand the real me.

Earlier this week, Cleveland Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam all but admitted regret in acquiring Watson and then inking him to a fully-guaranteed $230 million deal.

"We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun. We thought we had the quarterback. We didn’t, and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole," he told reporters from the annual league meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. "Listen, I’ve said this I think numerous times, Deshaun Watson was an entire organization decision, and it ends with (co-owner) Dee (Haslam) and I, so hold us accountable."

Well, shortly after those harsh comments, Watson took to Instagram to show off the work he's been putting in his Achilles rehab.

In the social media post, Watson shared 20 photos of his rehab, mostly in the gym working out shirtless in the Browns' facility.

"maybe, if I weren’t built for this, I’d let it phase me .." Watson wrote.

Watson was suspended to begin his tenure in Cleveland and only appeared in six games in 2022. The following season, he was held to just six games again. He then only played seven games in 2024 after he suffered a ruptured Achilles during a home game. He ruptured the Achilles again earlier this year.

In his final season with the Texans in 2020, he led the NFL in passing yards. But since then, he's yet to throw for 1,200 in any season. He didn't play in 2021.

EX-NFL KICKER 'SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING' CONGRESS RUN: REPORT

The Browns have re-worked Watson’s contract twice since December with void years being added through 2030 to give them some financial flexibility to spread out dead money on the contract instead of taking a massive hit in one season. Watson is slated to be a free agent after the 2026 season.

All signs point to Cam Ward going first overall to the Tennessee Titans, but Shedeur Sanders will likely be available to the Browns with the second pick. However, they haven't exactly showed their hand at all, considering Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter will also likely be on the board.

The Cleveland Browns took a big leap of faith when they traded for Deshaun Watson and signed him to a five-year deal reportedly worth up to $230 million, all of which was guaranteed.

Watson’s performance on the field has been one to forget. He has gone from a three-time Pro Bowler who was a force to be reckoned with on the field to an oft-injured quarterback who has rarely seen the field.

That is all without the baggage of more than two dozen sexual misconduct allegations that came with him from Houston to Cleveland.

After rupturing his right Achilles tendon for the second time in three months, it remains unclear if Watson will miss out on the entire 2025 season. He was initially injured during an October game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he later ruptured his Achilles for a second time in January.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson ruptured an Achilles again and needed another surgery to repair it, according to a new report.

Watson originally tore an Achilles Oct. 20.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry said during a press conference this week the quarterback had a setback, and tests showed the new tear, according to the NFL Network.

The surgery leaves Watson’s status for the 2025 season in doubt.

Without Watson, the Browns could turn to the NFL Draft or free agency to replace him.

The team holds the No. 2 overall pick in the draft and will have the opportunity to select top quarterback prospects Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward if the Tennessee Titans don’t take one of them with the No. 1 overall pick.

The trade for Watson a few years ago has hampered the Browns, who gave up a lot of draft capital and signed him to an exorbitant deal.

The Browns gave up first-round picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024, in addition to other picks, to acquire him from the Houston Texans.

On top of the draft capital the Browns gave the Texans to acquire him, they signed Watson to a five-year, $230 million contract that is fully guaranteed.

With Watson’s play and off-field issues, the contract has quickly become a nuisance.

In his three seasons with the team, Watson has played 19 games.

Watson was suspended for 11 games two seasons ago after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during scheduled massage sessions.

Before getting injured this season, Watson struggled on the field.

The former Clemson quarterback completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards while throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven starts. The Browns were 1-6 in his starts this season.

To make matters worse for the Browns, Baker Mayfield, who they replaced with Watson, is flourishing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With Mayfield, the Bucs have won back-to-back NFC South titles.

Depending on how things end up with Watson’s injury and who the Browns bring in at quarterback this offseason, there is a chance Watson has played his last snap with the Browns.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a setback in his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon rupture, general manager Andrew Berry said Monday.

Berry said the team only learned about Watson’s new medical situation during player exit meetings on Sunday after the team lost its final regular-season game against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

Berry said the team should have more information coming on Watson in the next few days.

Watson has been out of action since he suffered the injury Oct. 20 against the Cincinnati Bengals at home. Browns fans were heard cheering the Watson injury as frustrations over his lack of on-field performance had grown.

Cleveland acquired Watson from the Houston Texans in a blockbuster trade in 2022 after he sat out the entire 2021 season and faced more than two dozen accusations of sexual misconduct. Cleveland signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract.

Watson settled the unsavory claims and served a suspension from the league over it. But since he suited up for the Browns in 2022, he’s only appeared in 17 games. He went from being a three-time Pro Bowler and budding star talent to an injury-riddled quarterback.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport floated two veterans who could compete for the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback job in 2025.

The Browns and Deshaun Watson restructured the quarterback’s contract on Friday to create cap flexibility for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, according to multiple reports. It also made it so that Watson, who signed a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract in 2022, will be back in Cleveland next season.

But whether he enters Week 1 as QB1 is still up in the air. Rapoport said Sunday there might be a competition held.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s veteran competition. Aaron Rodgers, if he’s not on the Jets, would be one potential option, Kirk Cousins another," Rapoport said.

Rapoport added that Rodgers’ future with the New York Jets could hinge on whether they trade Garrett Wilson. He said that Wilson might want off the Jets if Rodgers is brought back for the 2025 season.

Rodgers’ short stint with the Jets has been nothing but tumultuous. He has 3,511 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes this year.

Cousins’ time with the Atlanta Falcons appeared to be over as well. The team replaced Cousins with Michael Penix Jr. following a narrow victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Cousins went on a streak of zero touchdown passes and eight interceptions over the course of four games.

Cleveland will have some options at quarterback. They could choose to go the rookie quarterback route, since they will likely have a high draft pick in 2025.

NFL closes probe of latest Deshaun Watson sexual assault allegations without discipline

The NFL's investigation into sexual assault allegations against Deshaun Watson has concluded.

After spending the past several months reviewing the case, the league has ended the probe.

An NFL spokesperson cited a lack of sufficient evidence while explaining the decision to shut down the investigation.

"The matter is closed," league spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email to The Associated Press. "There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy."

Watson will not face punishment from the league. Since his arrival in Cleveland, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback has mostly struggled when he has been healthy enough to take the field.

He has played in only 19 games over three seasons due to suspension and injuries.

He is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row after he sustained an Achilles tendon tear in October. The 29-year-old quarterback continues to rehab the injury in hopes of returning next season.

Watson served an 11-game suspension in 2022. In September, a woman accused him of a sexual assault in Texas. She was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the sides reached a confidential settlement.

Watson denied the allegations through his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

The Browns still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons after they traded three first-round picks to Houston and signed him to a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract that has backfired.

Watson was acquired by the Browns, who were comfortable with his character despite Watson being accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Houston Texans.

Watson's future with the Browns remains uncertain.

His massive contract — and its salary cap ramifications — has put the Browns in a bind in terms of improving their roster. Cleveland has had a disappointing season after making the playoffs a year ago and could move on from Watson, but the cost would be exorbitant if the team releases him.

The Browns signed Jameis Winston for one season to be Watson’s backup. Winston has gone 2-3 as a starter since taking over. The Steelers host the Browns Sunday. Cleveland upset Pittsburgh in Week 12 in a snowy AFC North tilt.

The Cleveland Browns dropped to 3-9 after falling to the Denver Broncos on "Monday Night Football," but fans have to admit Jameis Winston has kept the team in games as the team’s starting quarterback.

He's won games against two divisional opponents, the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the first half clock winding down Monday, ESPN color commentator and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman discussed the Browns’ quarterback situation.

During his synopsis, he called Deshaun Watson, the embattled quarterback out for the remainder of the season, an "albatross."

"You know, this is a tough league," Aikman began his monologue, via Awful Announcing. "And we all talk about parity. But when it comes to your hometown team, nobody wants to hear it. And Kevin Stefanski is an outstanding football coach, and he’s proven that. Two-time Coach of the Year. What he did to that group last year to get them in the postseason — they started four quarterbacks, they were decimated with injuries.

"And I get it. You know, this year hasn’t been what people thought coming in, but the albatross is Deshaun Watson. If you go to Jameis Winston earlier in the year, does this look different? Because I would say the defensive struggles, in at least a small part, have had to do with how inept the offense has been moving the football. I think it’s affected the defensive play, as well."

Aikman doubled down later in the game when Winston had 355 passing yards and Jerry Jeudy caught six of those passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.

"You can’t help but wonder what this year might have looked like for Cleveland if Jameis had taken over from the start or at least much sooner than when he did," Aikman said. "I know Deshaun Watson goes down with a torn Achilles, but it had been a real struggle offensively watching him."

The Browns’ season is virtually over in terms of playoff contention, but the organization has a lot of evaluation to do at the quarterback position after Watson went 1-6 to start the season before tearing his Achilles against the Cincinnati Bengals Oct. 20.

During those games, Watson threw for 1,148 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, while getting sacked 33 times.

Since Winston took over Stefanski’s offense, the Browns have gone 2-3 with the 30-year-old passing for 1,680 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the five games he’s started.

The biggest issue with Watson is the $230 million contract he signed that has him under Cleveland control until the 2027 campaign, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Do the Browns want to see Watson recover and try to find his way again, hoping he can recreate the magic he had in Houston with the Texans? Or does the organization want to move on, especially considering off-the-field allegations that continue even after the numerous civil lawsuits that led to an 11-game suspension in 2022?

The Browns will deliberate over those very questions while evaluating Winston over the team’s final five games, starting with a rematch against the Steelers Sunday in Pittsburgh.
